As an accredited sanctuary, SWCC must operate under strict and rigorous guide

You'd be surprised how many nuts it takes to raise a bear cub 🐻 And we ave 8 cubs in our care!

We're currently in need donations of nuts through Amazon and Costco to help keep these young bears fueled for the wild future ahead of them.

Our releasable cubs are busy growing, climbing, exploring, and eating their way through our nut supply.

Please see below for the links to help feed these cubs:

If you've ever visited Southwest Wildlife, there's a good chance Felix made an impression on you.

As one of our most recognizable Sanctuary residents, Felix the mountain lion has become a favorite among guests over the years. While many visitors see him relaxing in his enclosure, recently he spent a morning behind the scenes at our Veterinary Hospital for his annual wellness exam.

These exams are a critical part of the care we provide. Felix received vaccines, radiographs, bloodwork, a dental assessment, and other routine diagnostics that help our veterinary team monitor his health and identify potential concerns before they become serious.

What makes Felix's exam even more remarkable is the preparation that goes into it. Through ongoing training with our Animal Care team, Felix has learned to willingly participate in medical procedures, helping reduce stress and making routine healthcare safer for everyone involved.

Have you met Felix during a visit to the Sanctuary? We'd love to hear your favorite memory in the comments below. 🐾

Meet John Deer! John is a Coues deer, a subspecies of the white-tailed deer that can be found in Arizona’s southeastern mountains, but ranges up to the Mogollon Rim and into the White Mountains. He was found wandering an apartment complex, and while we’ll never know exactly how he ended up there, when he was brought to us, it was obvious he was far too friendly and curious to be released. He’s been with us as a sanctuary resident since.

Ziggy's enclosure just received an upgrade!

Over the course of about two weeks, our Facilities Team worked to build and prepare a brand-new climbing structure complete with ramps, shaded resting areas, open ground space, and elevated lounging spots designed specifically for Ziggy’s needs and behaviors.

The most challenging part? Although the structure was built over many days, everything had to be fully assembled in a single day while Ziggy was away in the clinic for her annual exam. That meant extensive planning and preparation ahead of time to ensure the installation could happen safely and efficiently within a very limited window.

The new design gives Ziggy more opportunities to climb, explore, relax comfortably in the shade during Arizona summers, and move throughout her space with ease. The details were thoughtfully considered by our Animal Care Team to help her stay physically and mentally engaged while she remains a permanent resident at the Sanctuary.

A huge thank you to our incredible Facilities Team for the hard work and dedication that made this transformation possible. Projects like this play an important role in providing the highest quality lifelong care for non-releasable native wildlife. 💛
