Our visit to St. Croix Island International Historic Site marked our 430th national park unit – reaching our goal of visiting every national park unit managed by the National Park Service (as of August 2024). Of course, there will be more and we will be delighted to visit them, but achieving 430 was an amazing end to an incredible journey. What an amazing journey. Hope you enjoy this weeks blog on St. Croix Island International Historic Site as much as we enjoyed visiting the park unit. Happy Labor day weekend!

Remote. Rugged. Wild. Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in northern Maine is all of this. Established as a national monument in 2016 by President Obama, the land was donated by the co-founder of Burt’s Bees, to be maintained as wilderness in perpetuity.

Butting up against Baxter State Park on west side, the main access points to Katahdin are on the north and south. These access the Northern and Southern sections. A few other sections of the park are to the east of the Penobscot River, open to hunting. In all, Katahdin Woods and Waters protects over 87,500 acres of land and the east branch of the Penobscot river. This is a must visit. Enjoy this weeks blog

Located in northeastern Arizona, Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site is near Ganado – about 20 miles west of Window Rock, Arizona, and 35 miles south of Chinle, Arizona. It is surrounded by Navajo tribal lands.

Navajo’s and earlier native American tribes had occupied this area for centuries due to the dependable water source, fed by natural springs. It was a good place to farm and raise their herds. The Navajos had a thriving community there until they were forced to leave on the “Long Walk” to reservations in New Mexico.

Make sure you take time to read this weeks blog and learn about this great history in Arizona!

We recently had the opportunity to revisit Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, when we were in southeastern Colorado to visit Amache – one of the newest national historic sites in the US. Unlike Amache, Bent’s Old Fort has been part of the National Park Service since 1960.

We visited Bent’s Old Fort and wrote about it in another blog. This visit we were able to stay a bit longer. It was cooler, allowing us to enjoy the stroll from the fort to the river – a 1.8 mile loop through huge cottonwood trees.

Ranger Tour

We were also able to stay around to participate in the Ranger-led tour. That was so worth our time! Even though we had visited before and walked through the entire fort, we learned so much more this visit. The ranger was so knowledgable and enthusiastic. She really made it interesting and fun for all ages.

Hope you enjoy this weeks blog!

On our quest to visit all 429 National Park units we recently went to SE Colorado. One of the newest national park units in the United States, Amache National Historic Site was designated in 2022, and formally established as a part of the National Park Service in 2024, the result of years of preservation efforts by local townspeople and others who recognized the significance of this place.

Originally called the Granada Relocation Center, Amache was once the 10th largest city in Colorado and home to over 7,300 Japanese – the majority, US citizens – sent there against their will. Between 1942 and 1945, over 10,000 people passed through this desolate place.

Hope you take time to read this blog and learn something new today!

Established in August 9, 1916, Capulin Volcano National Monument preserves an example of our volcanic past and the most perfect cinder cone in the US. The cinder cone rises up out of the grasslands of north eastern New Mexico – reaching over 8,000 feet above sea level. After 10 years of volcanic activity, over 16 square miles were covered in lava. Capulin is worth the detour to NE New Mexico! Enjoy the blog!

If you are passing through Albuquerque and would like to stretch your legs and take in some history, you may want to plan a quick visit to Petroglyph National Monument. Located on the north west side of Albuquerque, it is easily accessible – just 3 miles north off the Interstate 40 (exit 154). The national monument is an oasis inside the city, protected lands surrounded by subdivisions.

A visit to the War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Guam would not be complete without taking the time to visit the neighboring islands Saipan and Tinian in the US Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas (CNMI). Both islands were very important to the US war efforts in the Pacific. After Guam, Saipan is the second largest island in the Marianas, and offered the US a strategic base of operations. Tinian, although only 17 km long, provided them a flat airstrip.

The Battle of Saipan and the Battle of Tinian were important milestones in the War in the Pacific.

Make sure to open up all the links as this week blog has lots of great pictures.

Have a great week everyone and thank GOD for the Men and Women you have sacrificed so much for our freedom!

We recently visited War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Guam. It was almost 6,500 miles from our house and took 17 hours to get there. That’s a long way to go, but if you are trying to visit all the National Park Units you will need to go there, and if you are a World War II history buff, you will want to go there!

Enjoy this weeks blog as we explore our past in what was just an amazing eye opener on US History.
