New Flag Presented at Veterans Park in Dixie

Veterans Park, the small triangle at the intersection of Routes 6 and 15 in Dixie, marked its 75th anniversary this year. Over the years, the park has been the site of many veterans remembrance ceremonies hosted by the Fluvanna County American Legion Post 2003, Point of Fork Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Knights of Columbus, and the Fluvanna Ruritans.

During Veterans Day observances on November 11, 2025, members of the Point of Fork Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), noticed that the American flag flying at the park had become worn. Research by the chapter revealed that the original flag had been presented to the American Legion by the Point of Fork DAR on November 13, 1950. To honor the park’s 75th anniversary and this special connection, the chapter voted to present a new American flag.

On December 16, Sandra Lindner-Turner, Chaplain of the Point of Fork NSDAR, presented the new flag to Richard R. Eaton, Commander of American Legion Post 2003. Commander Eaton shared that the new flag will be raised on Memorial Day 2026 in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

Both the American Legion and the Point of Fork DAR continue to serve the Fluvanna community in many ways. The American Legion supports local youth through American Legion Baseball, sponsors high school students to attend Boys and Girls State, and conducts an annual oratorical competition. The Point of Fork DAR works to preserve local history by cleaning headstones in area cemeteries and encourages students to learn about American history through its annual essay contest. In 2024, the chapter also helped celebrate the 200th anniversary of General Lafayette’s return to the United States and to Fluvanna County.

American Legion Post 2003 Brings Christmas Cheer to Local Veterans

On Thursday, December 18, 2025, members of American Legion Post 2003 continued their annual tradition of supporting local veterans by delivering Christmas gifts to residents at Oakhurst Health & Rehabilitation Center in Fork Union.

Post members presented the gifts to Patsy Logan, Director of Oakhurst Health & Rehabilitation, for distribution to the six veterans currently residing at the facility. The veterans’ wishes were gathered through a wish list coordinated by Director Logan to ensure each gift reflected individual needs and preferences.

Following approval by the Post, funding was allocated for the project, with Roman Bakke and his wife, Florence, tasked with purchasing and wrapping the gifts.

This yearly effort by American Legion Post 2003 is part of its ongoing commitment to honor and remember veterans in the community, ensuring that those living at the facility receive a special reminder during the Christmas season that their service and sacrifices are not forgotten.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day

National POW/MIA Recognition Day was established in 1979 through a proclamation signed by President Jimmy Carter. Since then, each subsequent president has issued an annual proclamation commemorating the third Friday in September as National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

A national-level ceremony is held on every National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Traditionally held at the Pentagon, it features members from each branch of military service and participation from high-ranking officials.

In addition to the national-level ceremony, observances of National POW/MIA Recognition Day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and veterans' facilities.

No matter where they are held, these National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremonies share the common purpose of honoring those who were held captive and returned, as well as those who remain missing.

Since 1999, the POW/MIA Accounting community has created a poster commemorating National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The annual edition of the poster continues to honor this tradition.
