OPEN HOUSE SEASON IS HERE! The Wheatland Historical Association cordially invites you to visit the historic Sage-Marlowe House at 69 Main Street in the village of Scottsville. This season, our open house days will be the last Sunday of each month from June through Oct., beginning on Sunday, June 28 from 2- 4pm. This 1840s "workingman's" home has been lovingly furnished and maintained by the membership of the Wheatland Historical Assoc. and provides the public with a glimpse of life in the 19th century. As you walk through this quaint home, you will see original paintings, examples of clothing from the 1800 to 1900s, coverlets from the mid 1800s by local weavers, samplers, tableware, "thunder mugs", yellow ware mixing bowls and so much more.. You will find mysterious artifacts (especially in the kitchen) that will make you ask our helpful guides, "what in the world is this and how was it used"? The little kitchen garden is always open to visitors and ready to share fresh herbs to take home. Take advantage of this free opportunity to become acquainted with a small part of Wheatland's history. Open to all ages (a great learning experience for kids). Be sure to have a look at the many local history books by area authors and historians. Refreshments provided.

REMINDER! Thursday, April 16 | 7:00 PM
Union Presbyterian Church, 1 Browns Avenue, Scottsville
Join us for a fascinating talk by Jules Hoepting, Environmental Educator for NYS Parks. To the untrained eye, the remains of the Genesee Valley Canal might look like a simple ditch—but it’s actually a "faded tattoo" with a dramatic backstory. Like a soap opera plot, the canal's construction was filled with unexpected twists and "illogical ambition" before being replaced nearly overnight by the railroad. Come explore why so much effort was spent on this corridor and why it remains so relevant to our lives today. Lots of parking behind the church.

Jules Hoepting, Environmental Educator for NYS Parks will present a fascinating talk Thurs. April 16 at 7pm. in the Union Presbyterian Church, 1 Browns Ave., Scottsville. What remains of the Genesee Valley Canal is a ditch, often swampy or filled in by ecological succession, running through forests and along the edges of backyards, farmlands and canyons. A new person might see it as a scar on the land, but a trained eye will see it as a faded tattoo with a fascinating backstory. Like the plot of a soap opera, the process of building the canal was long and drawn out with unexpected twists, fueled by illogical ambition. Seemingly overnight, the canal was replaced by a railroad to carry on the transportation storyline. So, why go through all that effort? And how is the corridor relevant today?
Please join us on April 16 to hear Genesee Valley Canal:
An 1800’s Soap Opera and the Dream that Remains with Jules Hoepting, as we explore the canal’s history and modern-day significance.
