Motivated by God’s love, serving our by meeting the physical and spiritual needs without discrimination for a 140 years and counting in the Scranton area. The Salvation Army Scranton Citadel Corps began over 139 years ago, the mission is the same as it was then: serving our Scranton area community, and providing for the physical and spiritual needs of our community without discriminati
on. We would not still be here without the support of our Scranton area community, and we continue to alleviate the needs of our neighbors who are food insecure, living on fixed incomes, and who fall on hard times every so often: loss of income, reduction in income, and unexpected financial burdens. We provide financial assistance for utilities by administering UGI’s Operation Share and Pennsylvania American Water’s Dollar Energy grant programs. We also work with UGI, Pennsylvania American Water, PP& L, and Pennsylvania Utility Law Project and host Customer Assistance Events where neighbors can come and meet with representatives to get assistance or sign up for customer assistance programs and LIHEAP, LIURP, and LIWAP. We provide gifts, toys, and pajamas or clothing, as well as stocking stuffers through our Christmas Assistance Program: Angel Tree, Adopt A Family, and Sheetz 4 Kids. We have youth music & art programs for school-age children, and healthy snacks and meals are provided during those programs. We also work to make summer camp available and accessible to children in our community at Camp Ladore in Waymart, PA. We visit our neighbors who reside in local assisted living facilities at least twice a year, bringing them friendly smiles and small gift remembrances. We provide weekly opportunities for service, fellowship, worship, and education for women (age 16 & up); and a weekly opportunity for service and fellowship with our men's club (age 16 & up). We also have discipleship classes for children, teens, and adults who are seeking to learn more about God and grow in their faith journey, on Sundays and throughout the week (see our schedule). The current officers (pastors/administrators) are Captains Kirsten & Neil Childs who were appointed in June 2022. There are 2 dedicated full-time staff, an Office Manager and a Property Manager; and volunteers who diligently work in mission to provide for the needs of our neighbors in need throughout the year.
