PEER LEADERS CLUB
High School Peer Leaders Are Mentors to Freshman

The Peer Leaders are comprised of North Shore High School seniors that have applied and received teacher recommendations. They facilitate a North Shore freshman group throughout the school year, assist the 8th grade orientation during the spring and participate in any additional school-related activities during the school year.

The Peer Leaders are provided with training to further develop the tools of empathy and interpersonal skills and grow their awareness of issues connected to bullying and harassment in order to serve as role models within the North Shore High School community. At the Peer Leadership training, students participate in various activities designed to inspire deeper contemplation of and learning about issues relevant to their peer group and tools to better serve them as peer leaders including conversation starters, ice-breaker activities, and methods for reflection.

Peer Leaders are mentors and provide on-going information and support to their freshman groups. They are involved in proactive steps to promote anti-bullying/harassment initiatives. The Peer Leaders are responsible for Unity Day activities in which they develop an anti-bullying/harassment pledge and encourage staff and students to sign. The Peer Leaders attend training before the school year starts and provide an orientation for the freshman before the first day of school and continue with on-going meetings throughout the year. During the first few months of school the Peer Leaders meet with the freshman weekly to assist with the transition. During the 2nd semester, they meet with them monthly to continue to provide information and support.

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to be in the Peer Leader Club and provide so much knowledge, support, and friendship to their younger peers at North Shore High School to help make their transition easier. Go Vikings!

NORTH SHORE HIGH SCHOOL 9TH GRADE ORIENTATION
Incoming 9th Graders Welcomed at North Shore High School

This morning, the high school principals along with guidance counselors, faculty, and staff warmly welcomed the Freshman Class of 2026-27 to North Shore High School.

To begin orientation, the Peer Leaders and administrators happily greeted approximately 222 incoming freshmen. The Peer Educators Club (Peer Leaders) led small group tours of the building and classrooms, discussed schedules, held fun break-the-ice games, opened lockers, and answered any questions or concerns to help make their transition to high school easier.

It was wonderful to see students once again in our schools, as the incoming freshman class was eager to reunite with their friends from the middle school. Additionally, at 7 PM parents and guardians will listen to an introductory presentation about North Shore High School.

To conclude the orientation, the HS PTO treated the freshmen to cold Italian ices outside in the courtyard! Many thanks to the HS PTO, administration, counselors, and Peer Leaders for all their assistance during the orientation. Best of luck to the graduating Class of 2030 during your high school years!

NORTH SHORE MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADE 6 ORIENTATION
Welcome Sixth Graders!

Today, Principal Dr. Ryan O’Hara along with Assistant Principal Dr. Maram Mabrouk, faculty, and staff welcomed their sixth graders to North Shore Middle School. It was an exciting time for the sixth graders, as they met their new principals and counselors, saw their old friends, and were introduced to new peers from the other North Shore elementary schools.

Principal Dr. O’Hara expressed how thrilled he was to welcome his sixth graders to North Shore Middle School for the 2026-27 school year. He reassured them that it was okay to feel both excited and nervous. He stated that it was going to be a wonderful year of learning and opportunities for all. For the sixth graders, he discussed their new schedules, teams, lockers, and highlighted the tremendous number of prospects at North Shore Middle School including exciting electives, intriguing courses, and expanded social circles.

During the orientation, the North Shore Middle School Counseling Department was available to assist the sixth graders. Students took small group tours led by upper classmates and faculty, and had the opportunity to see their classrooms, walk their schedules, open their lockers, and ask important questions. 6th graders were invited back later in the afternoon with their parents and/or guardians to not only familiarize themselves with the building but also practice opening their lockers and decorating them!

In addition, the Middle School PTSO was available, handing out boxes of school supplies! We wish all of the North Shore Middle School students, faculty, and staff the best of luck in 2026-27!

NORTH SHORE HIGH SCHOOL NAMED TOP 2 IN NASSAU COUNTY BY US NEWS & WORLD REPORT - HERALD ARTICLE

By Will Sheeline
North Shore High School has been named the second-best high school in Nassau County and the 11th-best in New York state by U.S. News & World Report, a recognition that district officials said reflects years of work focused on expanding academic opportunities while supporting students. They added that while the recognition is worth celebrating, rankings are not the North Shore School District’s primary measure of success.

CarolAnn Smyth, assistant superintendent for instruction, said that the district has seen an increase in the number of students enrolling in and succeeding in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses. “I think that’s one factor,” Smyth said, “and I do think, over the years, we’ve put a lot of work into just building up students’ literacy and math readiness and proficiency, so that when they get to the high school, they’re prepared to do really well.”

Eric Contreras, the HS principal, said the rankings are meaningful because they validate work already taking place in the school. “Not everything that gets measured matters, and not everything that matters gets measured,” Contreras said, “and usually there’s a lot of stuff that’s qualitative in schools that don’t speak to all the things that make me so proud every day here."

Board of Education President Andrea Macari said the rankings were a welcome opportunity to celebrate the district’s work, but added, “I don’t need a ranking to prove to me the value of a North Shore education...” She added, “These methodologies do not capture the day-to-day magic that happens in our buildings, the indescribable feeling our teachers and students experience,” Macari said. “The beauty of what it is to be a child at North Shore — the methodology does not measure that.”

Tom Dolan, interim superintendent since July 19, credited the district’s students, teachers and staff.

NORTH SHORE HS RANKED #11 IN NY STATE & #2 ON LONG ISLAND By US News & World Report
The North Shore School District is proud to announce that North Shore High School was recently ranked 11th within New York and #2 on Long Island ( #2 in Nassau County) based on reporting by US News & World Report. The article stated, “Students have the opportunity to take International Baccalaureate coursework and exams. The IB participation rate at North Shore Senior High School is 60%, and the 12th grade enrollment is 193 students. Additionally, 14% of students in the school are economically disadvantaged.” See US News & World Report at https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/new-york/districts/north-shore-central-school-district/north-shore-senior-high-school-14059

Dr. Carol Ann Smyth, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction said, “We are incredibly grateful for our students, families, faculty, staff, and administrators, whose dedication and hard work make it possible to provide a student-centered education for every child at North Shore. This recognition is something our entire community can celebrate, while remembering that no single measure defines a student’s success or our success as a school community. We believe in multiple measures of achievement, including academic growth, intellectual curiosity, creativity, perseverance, engagement, and each student’s ability to discover and pursue their strengths and passions. We are proud of this recognition, but even more proud of North Shore’s collective commitment to ensuring that every student is known, supported, and challenged.”

Mr. Eric Contreras, North Shore HS Principal stated, “Over the past five years we have experienced growing numbers of students taking both AP and IB exams. This is the result of the hard and innovative work of our teachers, counselors, directors, and the district’s strategic growth of programs and courses. Our students take on a variety of challenging and engaging experiences to prepare them for college and careers beyond North Shore High School. We are proud of our students and grateful to the entire Viking Community that supports them. We continue our commitment to the distinct personalized journeys our students take to find success and discover their dreams, passions, and ambitions. Go Vikings!”

To conclude Dr. Tom Dolan, added, "I have the privilege of standing behind the spotlight and shining it on the stars of this achievement: The administration and staff of North Shore High School! Congratulations to them. North Shore High School's pre-eminent position among the nation's schools is again secured thanks to them."

Congratulations to all on this wonderful recognition!
Go Vikings!
