PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT:

With the official unofficial start to the summer season upon us, we at the Sea Isle City Police Department wanted to send out a few reminders to our residents and visitors to keep everyone as safe and secure as possible because crime does not take a vacation;

• DO NOT leave your vehicles unlocked with the keys or key fobs inside. Likewise, do not leave your vehicle unlocked with valuable items/weapons inside. Last summer, multiple vehicles were stolen from our jurisdiction because they were easily accessible and had keys/key fobs inside. “Smash and Grabs” are not the M.O. for the incidents that we have dealt with recently.

• Be mindful to keep your garage doors closed when you are leaving your garage or home unattended. We frequently handle theft complaints from open garages, mostly committed by juveniles, when a garage is open/easily accessible and there is a refrigerator or high value items (i.e. fishing poles and bicycles) in view. Alcohol and bicycles are the primary targets of these thefts.

• For parents of juveniles under the age of 18, pursuant to Ordinance #3-8, a curfew is in affect “from May 15 to September 15, curfew shall be 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. of the following day on any Monday through Sunday.” Parents or guardians could be subject to receiving a summons for a violation of this ordinance if their child is out past curfew. Please review this ordinance to fully understand the parameters.

It is no secret that shore communities have seen a significant influx of juvenile related crimes and complaints over the past few years. Accountability for these crimes and offenses does primarily lie with the juveniles who commit them and with their parents, but please, be mindful and do not get complacent. Most of the offenses committed in our town are preventable by taking basic security measures like closing and locking your doors.

Thank you, and lets have a great summer!

🇺🇸Washington, D.C. 🇺🇸

Sergeant Mehlhouse, Patrolman Rutter, and Patrolman Markley have completed their ride to Washington D.C. honoring Police Officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. ⁣⁣They represented the Sea Isle City Police Department as a part of the greater Law Enforcement United Inc. organization.
⁣⁣
Over the past few days, riders from all over the country have been making their way to the Capitol via bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle for National Police Week. ⁣This week serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that Police Officers face everyday and the sacrifices too many have made. It also hits especially close to home as we remember our own fallen officer, Patrolman Michael P. Cullinane #14, who made the ultimate sacrifice and will not be forgotten.
⁣⁣
Excellent work to everyone involved. Your support for the affected families, departments, and municipalities does not go unnoticed and we are proud of each of your efforts.

HERO - Everyone needs to know the story of the recently promoted PBA delegate who stopped a would be killer just over a week ago. Sgt. Muhammad Ali of South Tom’s River had only minutes to rescue the suspect’s intended targets and then engage the suspect. “This is the definition of a hero. He put his own life on the line to stop the suspect from killing two people,” said New Jersey State PBA President Peter Andreyev.

Details of Incident:
A 37-year-old from Toms River had moved to Maine last fall for a new job in security but lost his job in March.

On April 29, he thought he lost his longtime girlfriend for good. They had kids together.

She’d finally broken if off with him, obtained a restraining order against him at the Toms River Police Department, where she told officers he had guns and threatened to “visit her” with them.

You don’t know crazy yet,” he told her in a Facetime call that day, according to court documents. She heard a gun click during the call and the sounds of packing. She tracked his location: he was headed south.

The suspect had indeed packed up some belongings, including a tactical vest, and left Bangor, Maine, and drove the eight hours to Ocean County.

The woman went to Tom’s River Police who began their investigation. By the time they were able to track suspect’s cell phone and get a ping, it was near exit 100 on the Garden State Parkway — just 20 minutes from the Toms River exits.

Investigators called South Toms River police and they got to the home at 8:33 p.m. Sgt. Muhammad Ali knocked on the front door and a person inside was so terrified, she called police thinking it was suspect.

At 8:46 p.m., the residents left the home with a suitcase.

Two minutes later, Sgt. Ali learned via police radio that suspect’s vehicle was spotted in the area. Seconds later, the suspect’s vehicle roared down the street, its engine revving, sending Sgt. Ali darting behind his patrol vehicle for cover.

He saw the Toyota 4 Runner’s headlights come down the street, careen across the lawn and the suspect hop out with a pistol in his hand. He was wearing the ballistic vest.

Sgt. Ali screamed at suspect , who was trying to break into the home, “Drop the gun”.

“No!” the suspect yelled. The sergeant fired five times, hitting the suspect twice. Sgt. Ali kicked the gun away from the suspect, called for backup and provided him with medical aid.

The suspect survived and is charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and related crimes for the April 29 incident, including trying to kill Ali with his vehicle.
