Airshow

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds headlined the 45th Annual Airshow in Salinas. The Airshow is quite a spectacle with many unique air demonstrations plus crowd-pleasing monster trucks, and many educational and play zones for the entire family.

But does it need the Thunderbirds?

Veterans For Peace San Diego Chapter researched the carbon footprint of a typical military airshow. A typical flight team uses approximately 18,200 gallons of jet fuel per hour of flying time. A 40-minute show consumes about 82,500 pounds of jet fuel, releasing 118 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

The U.S. military is the world’s largest institutional consumer of fossil fuels and emitter of greenhouse gases. And it never makes public its data on consumption. But some research data emerges. Each of the Army’s 60,000 Humvees get between 4 and 8 miles per gallon of diesel fuel. The M1 Abrams tank gets about 0.6 mpg.

The point is that for entertainment, we accept without second thoughts an enormous pollution spectacle from military jets in the Airshow. Global destructive climate events regularly show us the effects of 300 years of fossil fuel use.

How do we get serious about reducing fossil fuel use? The Airshow could discontinue inviting military jets. The balance of the show is valid family entertainment. Do we need the Thunderbirds? It may only be symbolic. But seriously, do we need the Thunderbirds?
