Today, Wes Moore, the Governor of the state of Maryland spoke at the AI and Digital Modernization Announcement. It was the first big announcement of 2024 focusing his administration’s efforts about how we work together to modernize the state government. He said, “I know “AI” and “cyber” sound scary, but the reality is that this technology is already affecting our lives. So do we wait for it to evolve even more and find ourselves flat-footed against the challenges of tomorrow? Or do we take action to ensure we lead in this moment?
I couldn’t agree more. In 2012, I began on a journey to learn about Smart Cities and its benefits to government but more importantly how it would create a citizen centric culture of governance. In 2016, we began to realize my vision turning the city into the World’s First Authentic Small Smart City. Our team along with the City Council at that time worked diligently meeting, planning, strategizing and executing bringing about intrinsic change and innovation.
We had tremendous partners including multinationals, national and regional leaders making foot prints in the sands of time. We were leaders developing the first shared services hub that would have allowed other municipal governments of like sizes to make the digital transformation necessary to not be left behind.
Unfortunately, forces did not allow that work to continue. However, it is my hope that the Maryland General Assembly will continue to work with our Governor to make Maryland the leading innovative state in the Union. We cannot sit idly by while the world is advancing. We cannot be spectators but engaging participants in digital transformation. We cannot be intimidated by progress but embrace it and benefit from it. It’s still our time let’s seize the moment before the moment seizes us.
