The Association of Information Management Students at University of Washington (UW AIMS) recently hosted a startup career fair. With a turnout of around 200 students and 11 startups, conversation among employers and students could be heard echoing outside the HUB’s Lyceum, as students connected with employers and learned about new job opportunities. Along with the Information School's iStartup Lab, the career fair is an example of our dedication to forging valuable connections, supporting new ventures and encouraging student and alumni entrepreneurship.

Last month, 42 Informatics students presented their research endeavors at the UW’s annual Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Showcasing the diversity of undergraduate research in the Information School, Informatics students presented oral presentations, poster sessions, visual arts, and even performances.

Their projects explored topics including cybersecurity and generative AI to digital identities and cultural dance traditions, demonstrating how Informatics draws on multiple disciplines to address information problems. For his Information School Capstone, MLIS student John Adler is helping the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) create a large, offline archive of satellite imagery to help researchers develop a more complete picture of ecological change.

Scientists at NEON study how ecosystems change over time, but their field instruments and low-altitude aircraft capture only short windows of data, and they don’t have a standing satellite imagery archive of the same sites.

John was a navigator in the Navy, and his background in mapping and scientific data shaped the way he approaches librarianship. The MLIS program offered him a way to connect those interests: science, information access, mapping and service.

Washington State Librarian Sara Jones and Team Keystone member John Thomas are pictured here at last week's University of Washington Information School Capstone Showcase. This capstone team worked with their sponsor Shawn Schollmeyer to create a new user interface for the library’s Union List of Newspapers on Microfilm database. It’s an essential tool to locate microfilm negatives for newspapers published in Washington and will be shared with other libraries for interlibrary loans and digitization projects. The team gained valuable experience developing library software and solving real-world workflow challenges.
