Yesterday, Mayor Wilson released a renewal of the Seattle Transit Measure. If approved by City Council and voters, it will fund 280,000 King County Metro bus trips a year, construction projects to improve transit, 22,000 free ORCA cards for qualifying lower-income residents, and more.

The proposal would renew and expand the Seattle Transit Measure previously approved by 80% of voters in 2020. Seattle uses the majority of sales tax revenue to pay for more transit service, especially at off-peak times. If approved by the Seattle City Council and passed by voters, the proposal will take effect in 2027 and last for 10 years.

The Mayor’s proposal calls for a 0.3% sales tax expected to raise an average of $138 million annually over the 10-year measure. This is estimated to cost the median two-person Seattle household about $58 a year. This replaces the current 0.15% sales tax expiring in March 2027 which currently costs the median household $29 annually.

The proposal was developed through community input on programs and services including surveys, community events, and ongoing discussions with the Transit Advisory Board and Transportation Equity Workgroup. The measure also builds on the in-depth public engagement and planning that led to the 20-year Seattle Transportation Plan.

Seattle City Council will now review the proposal. Council is expected to hear public comments, deliberate on the measure, and finalize the Seattle Transit Measure Renewal Proposal for potential referral to voters.

PIKE PLACE: tell us what you think about the new vehicle barriers. Our survey is open to all until June 30: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/R6GHYHD

The survey takes just a few moments to fill out.

Responses from our survey go directly to project managers and leaders who will help City leaders make data-informed policy decisions.

Temporary barriers were added in May to support a safe and secure Market experience for people and businesses this summer. The movable barriers allow people driving to access the Market in the morning and provide a space for people while maintaining limited vehicle access after 10 AM.

We want to hear from everyone. Residents, businesses, visitors, and community members of all backgrounds – your feedback will help us plan future upgrades and long-term solutions.

Pike Place Market is iconic. We want to ensure it remains a welcoming space for people to shop, work, eat, and explore.

Thank you for helping us shape the future of Seattle streets.

Soon, some of the world's greatest soccer (football, futbol, footy?) players in the world will come to Seattle for the World Cup, but they didn't get to their sport's biggest stage overnight. It took years of preparation to be ready.

You can be ready too by signing up for AlertSeattle, the city's official emergency alert system.

Text "Seattle" to 67283 and be the first to know when emergencies happen where you live, work, or play in the city so you can be ready for match day and beyond.

Wondering how the FIFA Men's World Cup will affect your commute? A little planning will keep your trips smooth.

Key things to know:

Seattle's matches begin Monday, June 15 at noon. There are six match days: June 15, 19, 24, 26 and July 1 and 6.

If you live or work near the stadium, Pioneer Square, S**O, or International District/Chinatown, expect major travel disruptions. On match days, many of the streets around Seattle Stadium will be reserved for pedestrian use only.

Using transit? Check your agency's alerts and use their trip planners. Buses and trains will likely be more crowded than usual.

Driving? While WSDOT's Revive I-5 work will be paused during the World Cup, you should still expect more traffic than usual. If you drive, buddy up to access HOV lanes, stay up-to-date on traffic impacts, and plan plenty of time.

While the city gears up for a global event, employees still need to get to work, students need to go to school, and everyone still has daily commitments.
