In the news: Seattle renters have more options to stay safe during extreme heat ☀️ A new Washington state law protects tenants’ ability to install and use qualifying portable cooling devices is now in effect. With wildfire smoke and extreme heat impacting our region, access to cooling devices with air filtration benefits helps keep households safe and healthy. Wildfire smoke continues to affect Seattle and surrounding areas. Additionally, it is going to be hot Wednesday through Friday with temperatures in the mid-80s to low 90s.

Wildfire smoke can cause and/or worsen many respiratory and cardiovascular health problems including asthma, chest pain, coughing, elevated heart rate, headaches, irritated sinuses, stinging eyes, and breathing.

This is especially for sensitive populations, but everyone should take precautions.

Stary inside if possible. If you can't stay cool at home, visit https://kcrha.org/severe-weather-shelter/ for a list of daytime cooling centers that are available.

Limit outdoor activities. If you have a planned activity, consider moving it indoors, if possible, or postponing it.

Keep home windows closed if possible. Use air conditioning in recirculation mode.

Heat is also dangerous. If your home gets too hot, it is better to open the windows for a short period of time or seek an alternate place to stay cool during the day.

Wear an N95 or N100 mask. When worn correctly they are effective at reducing exposure to smoke pollution.

Pay attention to how you and your loved ones react to the smoke and take active steps to reduce your exposure.
