Seattle Sensory Garden

Seattle Sensory Garden It will be a hands-on, accessible, safe experience for all. Fundraising is ongoing and plans for the next phase are underway.

An inclusive garden designed for all ages and abilities to experience nature through the five senses in imaginative, therapeutic, educational and life enhancing ways. The Seattle Sensory Garden builds upon the beauty of the historic Woodland Park Rose Garden to provide an inclusive and sustainable place to explore the senses. Our goal is to create a unique sensory experience that helps individuals

of all ages and abilities become aware and engaged in the ever-changing world around us and for all to learn how others with disabilities experience the garden and the world. The contrast of natural and manmade elements in the garden: of shape and texture, of color and pattern, of light and shadow, of sound and silence, of varied scents as plants come into bloom, will heighten awareness of each of the five senses and are designed to engage the visitor with the surrounding natural environment. Plans include accessible pathways and raised beds, Braille guides, water features, places to hide and climb as well as plantings designed to stimulate the senses of sight, sound, touch and movement. Ground was broken in June 2011 for the onsite demonstration garden at the NE corner of the Rose Garden. Accessible pathways were built by a dedicated core of volunteers, planting selected and labeled to educate as to the sensory elements engaged by the visitor. Volunteers are always welcome to join us and help our garden grow!
