Today we celebrated the completion of the Bell Street Improvements project-- and the last substantial project to be completed as part of the Waterfront Seattle Program-- with a ribbon cutting! Mayor Katie Wilson, CM Bob Kettle, Belltown leaders and community members joined us to celebrate the occasion. Our improvements on Bell Street have added amenities and a two-way protected bike lane on a narrowed roadway to promote pedestrian safety. The restored sign bridge, the only remaining physical marker of Alaskan Way Viaduct, now acts as a gateway to Belltown, near a previous viaduct off-ramp. Our sincerest gratitude to the Belltown neighbors for their patience through construction and those who joined us for this special occasion.

A person in the center holds a pair of oversized golden scissors. A green, metallic arch stands over the center of the frame and trees with green leaves stand on either side of the roadway.

A piece of the Alaskan Way Viaduct is back! Before the viaduct was demolished, this sign bridge was carefully removed and stored. Our dedicated team restored the sign bridge, and it was transported in pieces to Bell Street. At the site, it was welded to reattach the legs, lifted via crane and anchored into place where it now stands east of the Western Ave intersection, the gateway into the Belltown neighborhood.

Over the weekend we completed the installation of the salvaged Alaskan Way Viaduct sign bridge on Bell Street.

Thank you to our team for their careful work to restore and install the sign bridge. A part of Seattle’s past now has new life in Belltown. Our work is not done - we are installing lighting for the sign bridge and anticipate its completion in the coming weeks.

A segment of the waterfront bike lane will be closed near Pier 62 as early as February 25. To improve access for those biking or scooting on the waterfront, we will be fixing puddles in this area of the bike lane which has come to our attention since this segment was opened. This work requires a 24/7 closure of the bike lane between the Alaskan Way and Elliott Way intersection and Virginia St for approximately 2 weeks. To support the safety of all Waterfront Park users, people biking and scooting are asked to dismount their bikes and scooters when traveling through the park or use Alaskan Way to continue their travels.

Additionally, Alaskan Way between the Elliott Way intersection and Virginia St will be intermittently reduced to one lane for alternating traffic during work hours, Monday – Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM . A flagger will be on site to direct traffic. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times via the Park Promenade. Check out our flyer at the link here for more information.
