Meadowbrook Community Care

Meadowbrook Community Care Enriching North Seattle through services that Support, Educate and Engage the community. Check out the website for additional information.

Meadowbrook Community CARE (MC2) is involved in many projects centered on community and sustainability. These projects include the following:

THE COMMUNITY SHELTER MEALS - Sustainable NE Seattle (sustainableneseattle.ning.com) and its Community Kitchen Group affiliate, work with church and community residents to put together a monthly meal for shelter residents at Maple Leaf Lutheran Church. LA

KE CITY AFTERSCHOOL PROJECT - After 6 years of providing afterschool tutoring at Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in Meadowbrook (since 2002) MC2's relationship with World Vision/KidReach morphed into partnering with Seattle Parks and Recreation and their two community center sites in Meadowbrook and at Ravenna-Eckstein (2009). Along with these two sites we have secured a $3000 grant from Seattle Parks in 2010 to implement a community intake process to design an afterschool program for the Lake City community. The lack of Seattle Parks resources in the Lake City neighborhood was realized through MC2's community needs assessment at the outset of the organization's formation (2008). Along with the organization's other community commitments (Lake City Holiday Project, Meadowbrook Garden and Orchard and the Meadowbrook Creek Stewardship program) it is our goal to be effective and caring partners. LAKE CITY HOLIDAY PROJECT - The Lake City Holiday Project (LCHP) is a partnership between human service providers, donors and the community. The purpose of the project is to provide gifts to low-income children at holiday time. The project was started 21 years ago by Yolanda Martinez who was the Coordinator of the Lake City Little City Hall. Over the years the project has grown to serve over 600 children. SHARE SHELTER AT MAPLE LEAF - Maple Leaf SHARE Co-ed Shelter operates in the North End of Seattle, along with three other churches. The address of the Maple Leaf SHARE shelter is 10005 32nd Ave NE which is the address of Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in Meadowbrook. There is also one church shelter operation in Greenlake, three in Ballard, one in Wallingford, three in the University District, one in the International District and two in the South End of Seattle. The self managed SHARE shelter has been in place at Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in Meadowbrook since 1996. At that time, Catholic Community Services (CCS) began a major remodel and the SHARE nonprofit requested use of space at the Meadowbrook site. Since that time, year-round operations here have served 20 men and women nightly. Meadowbrook Community CARE (MC2) has been primary sponsor at the Maple Leaf site since 2008. Engaging the larger community in supporting the Maple Leaf site has been the major work of the nonprofit. When openings become available, existing Maple Leaf shelter residents screen interested applicants downtown Seattle in the basement SHARE office at the low income apartment building Josephinum. Access to the office is available in the alley between Second and Third Ave, off Stewart Street. URBAN CROSS TREK - Since 2004, the Urban Cross Trek Program has been a collaborative effort of inviting rural Lutheran church youth communities to visit and reside at Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in Meadowbrook during the beautiful summer months of Seattle weather. The groups have come from such states as Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana and Washington. Providing service opportunities (serving meals to those in need or working outdoors on sustainable projects) along with visiting the sites of the local region are part of the what makes this program succeed. MEADOWBROOK CREEK STEWARDSHIP PROJECT - MC2 partners with MCGO and Seattle Parks to facilitate care, upkeep and improvement of Meadowbrook Creek located directly behind the Meadowbrook Community Center. The creek empties into the Thornton Creek, running parallel to the community center's parking lot before dumping into the larger creek tributary. Eventually Thornton Creek accesses Lake Washington at Matthews Beach/Seattle Parks. Beginning in 2004, local provider Ryther Child Center's Outdoor Leadership Program spent summers improving creek trails at Meadowbrook. New spall, gravel and trail timbers were installed to improve safe navigation. Local and out of state college groups also have provided yearly volunteer time to this community trail. Urban Cross Trek has also spent yearly visits offering their time and effort. MC2 advocated, organized and help facilitate yearly visits. MEADOWBROOK COMMUNITY GARDEN AND ORCHARD (MCGO) - In partnership with Sustainable NE Seattle, Seattle Parks and City Fruit, MC2 has supported the building of the Meadowbrook Community Garden (2011) at Meadowbrook Park. It is located west of the tennis courts and Nathan Hale High School. MC2 also helps facilitate the expansion, maintenance and improvement of the Meadowbrook Orchard which borders NE 105th. Most funding for both projects come from the Meadowbrook Community Center Advisory Council. All construction, maintenance and care at both sites is provided by volunteers. Portions of past, present and future harvests from both sites are donated to the Community Shelter Meal when available. Cooking classes at the Meadowbrook Community Center and Lake City Food Bank are also beneficiaries of this community effort.

A visit with Black Farmers Collective-Yes Farm

The strength of a community can be measured by its commitment and access to resources. Urban gardens of all stripes exist within the City of Seattle city limits. Accessing the opportunity often is identified as an economic need to eat healthy and affordably. Another key element of strength is the collaborative relationship between garden communities.

A visit with BFC founder Ray Williams to Yes Farm this week highlights a commitment on the literal margins and a unique successful formula that engages social justice in both a rural and urban setting. Yes Farm, founded in 2016, is located on Washington D.O.T property on Seattle’s east side of I-5 right of way property between Yesler Way (overpass) and Jackson Street (overpass).

A companion piece to the BFC nonprofit work is a 4 acre rural farm acreage on the Eastside that gives a resourceful boost to those in need. As a BFC teaching tool, it also highlights an engaging business opportunity that lifts up those wanting to build resilience into their lives.

Urban development and street life also mark the Yes Garden property. As a juxtapose, dedicated BFC partnerships with their neighbors, Seattle University and Duwamish River Sustainability Association are active community that help keep seasonal engagement and advocacy front and center. Food security takes form in many different ways and in many different settings. Check it out.

The region-wide nonprofit fundraiser is this Tuesday, May 5. The annual GiveBIG campaign is a big deal for organizations of all shapes and sizes. Meadowbrook Community CARE, a North Seattle based community organization begun in 2008, is especially reliant on the abundant generosity of our larger community. Whatever the size of your commitment, the important work and results support a seasonal high standard of care.

MC2 galvanizes yearly support for the local SHARE coed shelter, family support at the holiday season, local public afterschool English language learning and the seasonal food security effort in the Lake City area. Harvests of care, engagement and actual food, warmth and stronger families get the results that help sustain the community we serve.

With the existing challenges of funding at all levels of city, state and US government, the call for abundant community giving is a challenge that we accept. Supporting families and children with educational, dietary and housing needs is critical, especially in these times. Give, as you can; we all together, can be BIG in the community of care for our neighbors in need. GiveBIG! It’s this Tuesday, thank you.

Zinnia here, Zinnia there

Don’t we wish they were everywhere? In Meadowbrook, lining the long walkway to Nathan Hale HS, facing east to the SPR tennis-sports complex, MCGO seasonal rainbow display of zinnias frame a colorful pollinator ’welcome’ sign to passersby. Thank you MCGO,

With so much yearly good will and food harvested at MCGO, the campaign to increase and maintain pollinator habitat is an additional beneficial ‘eyeful’ of fun. Take note, zinnias are at ‘work’ as good pollinators too. Enjoy with your eyes only, the flowers are bzzy.

To support that effort, up the hill from MCGO, MC2’s office and admin office
add a sidewalk blast of zinnia color in our support of the community’s pollinator commitment. A hard working pollinator focus also supports and promotes healthy habitat message to share with our neighbors.

Last week, MC2 and its hard working UW students partners offered up some Sunday time to prep the beds here for zinnia planting. They were also able to get some snap peas in the ground to start off the growing season. Support, educate and engage. Together, we do that.

MC2 Spring 2026 Update

MC2’s Magnuson Gardens support began this week with veggie starts pick up at the Hoop Haus of white bunching, leeks, cilantro, collards, cabbage and baby bok choi starts. The pollinator Scabiosa, aka pincushion also got the send off. The Hoop Haus, now rising from the early Spring storm damage, is also getting zinnia starts ready for planting.

MC2 kicked off its Wednesday midweek outreach at MCGO. Meadowbrook’s Seattle Park garden and orchard site also had its Easter kick off opening at the garden this past Sunday.

With local schools in Spring break mode, Costco Travel confirmed with MC2 this week their annual Fall 2026 backpack support for Lake City’s Olympic Hills Elementary School.

3 Things-Give BIG May 5

Driven by the rhythms of city life, Meadowbrook Community CARE (MC2) has worked the growing seasons of our urban gardens, the heat, cold and hunger of sheltering, the community gifting of holidays to hundreds of children and the Fall to Spring tutoring effort of the Seattle school year. For 18 years the planning and work in the heart of this Meadowbrook STRONG neighborhood has achieved successful results. Thanks to YOU

With these seasons of CARE, the yearly give BIG community fundraising (MAY 5) has helped sustain the important goals of the community nonprofit. During this reflective Spring season of renewal, we reach out to plead with our partners old and new to continue to support MC2 work through the yearly local give BIG campaign. Meadowbrook Strong is the message. Give BIG WA with Support, Engagement and Education, every year.

This ‘village’ concept of inclusive engagement by all, which relies on the many to donate whatever their resources may allow, looks to the reliable support of those
in need, the educating of those without resources and the diligent engagement needed to be a reliable year to year partner.

Look for upcoming updates from MC2’s Board of Directors as we continue to carry out our campaign of CARE.
Community And Resources Engaged.
Thank you for your care.
