Today we recognized Dolores Sibonga, who became the first Filipino American attorney in our state, the first female executive of the Washington State Human Rights Commission, and the first woman of color to serve on the Seattle City Council. She led the push for Seattle’s first affirmative action ordinance, elevated workers’ rights and employment issues, championed economic development, and fought discrimination against women of color. Her public service extended beyond elected office, with appointments to various commissions.

Dolores has been a voice for the community, with a journalism career spanning print and TV, and earning her an Emmy nomination for her work with KOMO-TV. In 2017, she and Joan Yosh*tomi created the Ruth Woo Emerging Leaders Fellowship to provide disadvantaged young people with government work opportunities.

The Council and the King County Executive proclaim August 18, 2026, as Dolores Sibonga Day in recognition of her achievements and contributions to the community.
