Seattle University Project on Family Homelessness

Seattle University Project on Family Homelessness We told the stories of families who are homeless, and connected those stories to meaningful action. The project concluded Aug. 31, 2020 after 10+ years.

https://www.seattleu.edu/artsci/departments/ips/community-projects/project-on-family-homelessness Seattle University's Center for Strategic Communications (CSC) established the project in late 2009 with the creation of the Journalism Fellowships on Family Homelessness. The fellowships program yielded outstanding and unprecedented in-depth reporting by six different news organizations and independe

nt journalists, and was commended by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism. In 2011, the project's name changed to the Project on Family Homelessness to reflect its expanded scope beyond journalism fellowships. We helped draw attention to family homelessness among veterans and brought our message to the public in unexpected settings. In 2012, our focus shifted to supporting our family homelessness advocacy partners, the non-profit organizations in Washington state who work to end family homelessness. We help tell the stories of families who are homeless, and connect those stories to meaningful action. The project concluded Aug. 31, 2020.

NEW from our team: Wear a mask and help keep yourself & others safe, with these handy tips created especially for young people - like the thousands of students who will be starting the Seattle University fall quarter in four weeks.

Did you know: Young people ages 20-39 make up 39 percent of COVID cases in Washington state - the largest of any age group? Our new grads Anneke & Mary talked to dozens of friends and acquaintances and found there's still confusion about the right way to wear a mask, distance and get tested. So they created this COVID Check-in Kit. Part 1, today: Wearing a mask - How, where, why.

More information: Public Health - Seattle & King County, Washington State Department of Health, UW Medicine and more.

Coming soon - COVID Kit, a guide for young people about life during the pandemic. Our assistants and recent Seattle U grads Anneke and Mary created this series on masking, distancing and testing, after talking to dozens of young people and hearing what they still wanted to know. Please help us get the word out starting tomorrow, especially as students around our state prepare for back to school.

On a Saturday afternoon in fall 2016, we gathered at The Seattle Public Library to explore how to create change with art. Our then-design assistant Mandy wrote about the profound experience, and shared the beautiful paintings she made as a reflection on the day. https://projectonfamilyhomelessness.org/2016/11/16/create-change-a-day-to-change-how-we-think-about-art-advocacy-and-homelessness/

"Create Change" was part of our "Streetwise: Revisited" partnership with SPL and Firesteel - YWCA.

This past week we've been remembering some of our favorite design work by our students designers on our Twitter page (twitter.com/sufamhomeless) and in the coming week we'll share some of their best data visualizations and infographics for partners. Check it out!

One month from today our project will come to an end, after 10+ years of journalism, storytelling, art and advocacy with amazing partners, and the funding of the Gates Foundation. We'll spend the next 31 days reminiscing about some of our favorite projects, and the amazing people and partners we've been fortunate to work with.

Learning about racism and housing means un-learning a false narrative, says our project assistant Mary. Starting with the film 13th - 2016 Netflix Movie, Mary shares some of the films, books and online conversations that opened her eyes to the long-lasting impacts of racism, especially on housing and homelessness.

Another honor for Mercy Housing Northwest: First, their Magnuson Park building won an award for historic preservation; then their brand-new Gardner Place and Allen Family Center won a different award, the Gold Nugget Award, for innovation in design, planning and building. Affordable housing for low-income families can be a model for the industry.

Other local nonprofit developers who were honored with a Gold Nugget Award: Low Income Housing Institute, Community Roots Housing (formerly Capitol Hill Housing) and DESC. Congrats to all these nonprofits, as well as their builders, architects and designers!
