Companis WA

Companis WA Get connected with an impactful, tailor-made volunteer role at companis.org! In 1997, Companis became a secular nonprofit with 501(c)3 registration.

Companis makes our community healthier, safer, and more just by matching skilled volunteers with nonprofits throughout Seattle, King County and Snohomish County. Companis began in 1994 as an outreach of Seattle First Baptist Church, matching those seeking service opportunities with nonprofits that need them, with founding Pastor Craig Darling modeling the fledgling agency on a Jesuit Volunteer Cor

ps program he observed in Detroit. Over 22 years, Companis has made more than 800 placements, in 131 agencies in the Puget Sound region.

A note for everyone who has placed their trust in Companis. The work continues, exactly as you know it. Our skilled volunteers are in their placements, our partners are supported, and our team is right here. What is new is the reach and the possibility ahead.

This week, a shoutout to Volunteer Kim in Everett, supporting our partners at VOA WW

Now that Companis is part of Project Access Northwest we want to introduce you to our new partners. Project Access Northwest connects our most vulnerable neighbors to the health care they need, matching them with volunteer providers across Washington. Their mission and ours fit together naturally. They connect people to care, and we strengthen the organizations that serve our communities.
Together, we reach further.

We are proud to announce that Companis is joining Project Access Northwest!

For more than 30 years, Companis has strengthened the Puget Sound nonprofit community by placing skilled professional volunteers where they are needed most, multiplying the impact of every placement. Joining Project Access Northwest extends that work across a greater part of Washington.

Together, the two organizations connect people to vital care while building lasting capacity in the nonprofits that serve our communities, meeting immediate needs and strengthening communities for the long run.

Our team, our programs, and our commitment to skilled service continue as our partners and volunteers know them. What grows is our reach and our ability to serve.

We are grateful to the volunteers, donors, and partners who made this possible, and we look forward to what comes next!

Companis has always grown to meet the needs of our community. Today we are looking ahead and asking the same question that has guided us for thirty years:

what does this moment ask of us?

We are excited about what comes next, and we will have more to share soon.

Over the years, Companis has made more than 1,800 volunteer placements with over 250 nonprofit partners across the Puget Sound region. That is skilled support reaching neighbors experiencing homelessness, illness, hunger, and persecution, and building community for refugees, immigrants, seniors, youth, and our LGBTQ neighbors. Together, we build a healthier, more just region.

We're so glad to introduce Katie-Lynn, one of our newest Companis volunteers! 🌟
(Here with Thomas from MSHH Donor Closet)
In May, we stopped by MSHH Donor Closet in Edmonds to welcome her in her new role, and the story of how she got there says everything about who she is.

Katie-Lynn has been through the experience of losing a limb. Rather than carry that quietly, she decided to turn it into fuel, reaching out to Companis because she wanted to connect her experience to something meaningful in the community.

That's exactly what we do: we listen, identify strengths, and match people with organizations where their contribution truly matters. MSHH Donor Closet , an amazing Non-Profit that collects used medical and mobility equipment, refurbishes it, and makes it available to those in need at a greatly reduced cost, was the right fit. Katie-Lynn knows that space as a former client, and now she's helping others access it.

We're celebrating Katie-Lynn for following her heart and sharing her experience so generously. And stay tuned, there's more to come from her!

Know someone ready to make a difference? We'd love to help them find their place.

Our volunteers give a year of skilled service, and they leave changed by it. Supported with connection, reflection, and community, 96 percent of Companis Workers complete their full year. They strengthen the organizations they serve and grow in the process. Changing lives, lives changing.

For more than thirty years, Companis has met the moment. When the Great Recession deepened need across the region, we grew. When the pandemic stretched nonprofits to their limits, we adapted again.
What does the moment need now?
We have ideas and we’re excited to share them soon.

Companis was born in 1994, in the early days of the HIV crisis and the movement to shelter refugees seeking sanctuary. Founder Craig Darling saw what skilled volunteers could do where other resources could not reach, and he saw something more: that giving back changes the giver. He called it “changing lives, lives changing.” More than thirty years later, that belief still guides everything we do.
