We're hiring! The Washington Labor Education and Research Center is looking for a Program Development Specialist (Program Specialist 3). The Program Development Specialist will be a 2-year project position that will help with additional fundraising and the creation and expansion of the Center's projects. The position will contribute a great deal to strengthening the LERC's financial standing, compliance, and sustainability.

This is a full-time, hybrid position based out of the LERC's office at South Seattle College's Georgetown Campus. The salary range for this position is $62,748 - $80,436. Application and first review of materials will begin 8/28/26.

Presenting WA LERC's 2026-2027 Evening Union Skills Classes: $30 each, six weeks per course, hybrid, both in-person at the Labor Center in Georgetown and online via Zoom. We encourage folks to register with their fellow union members!

First up, Introduction to Collective Bargaining for Workplace Power: Thursdays in October and November beginning October 8th.

This complete Bargaining 101 Course covers all aspects of bold, energetic, member-driven contract campaigns. Over the course of six weeks, we'll cover legal frameworks, skills at the bargaining table, researching and preparing contract proposals, planning effective participatory contract campaigns, negotiation skills, opening up participatory bargaining, and much more!

Looking for some local history? Check out these two books on the Seattle General strike from the LERC's Will Parry Library. In 1919, 65,000 workers in Seattle participated in a general strike for six days in support of the grievances of shipyard workers.

📘 James N. Gregory's book, "The Seattle General Strike," originally came out in 1964 and was rereleased for its 100 year anniversary, featuring a new photo essay.

📙Victoria Johnson's Book, "How Many Machine Guns Does it Take to Cook One Meal," explores the cultural philosophies that inspired the strike. Johnson argues that the strike followed the thinking of Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine.
