Alliance for Education

Alliance for Education The Alliance advances racial equity & educational justice for students in Seattle Public Schools. Public education is the cornerstone of democracy.

We’re on a mission to ensure every child in Seattle Public Schools is prepared for success in college, career and life. The Alliance for Education exists for the singular purpose of promoting excellence in public education in Seattle. We view Seattle Public Schools as essential to the health and vitality of our city. Our shared vision is of Seattle Public Schools as a high-performing, highly regar

ded urban school system, equipped to provide an excellent education to every student. Eliminating achievement gaps between student groups, which exist primarily along the lines of race, income, and ethnicity, is foundational to this vision. We believe our collective moral and economic responsibility is to ensure every child, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, zip code, or home circumstance, has the opportunity to succeed academically and to participate fully in the economic and cultural bounty of American life. We are dedicated to helping build and sustain a successful, innovative, joyful school system of which Seattleites can be proud. After more than 20 years, we remain passionately committed to strengthening our community, economy, and democracy through high quality public education.

Principal McDaniel asks her staff to remember WHY they are in this work of supporting students every day, sharing her own story.

Students today remind her of herself as a young person, and the lasting impact school staff have on youth.

That’s why we’re proud to name her and Highland Park Elementary our second Foster Award of 2026! Please help us to congratulate Principal Mary McDaniel!

It's not every day that your school is awarded $25,000 for having a great principal. 🤑 That's exactly what happened last week as we surprised Viewlands Elementary during an assembly with a BIG check and award for their growth in educational justice!

🗣️ "It takes all of us to help make a school thrive. And I have been very lucky to be around some incredible people." - Principal Wheeler

🎉 What a day at Viewlands!

Congratulations to Principal Carrie Wheeler & Viewlands Elementary School, recipients of the 2026 Foster Award! 🏆

Today’s surprise assembly was full of joy, celebration, community spirit AND a circus from past PE teacher. The afternoon was full of cheers in the gym for a $25,000 check AND for getting to jump over the principals at Viewlands in a relay race.

It was an honor to celebrate & invest in a school community leading with belonging, care, and opportunity for every student.

Where will our second (and final) Foster award school of 2026 be? You'll have to wait a little longer to find out! 👀

Over 30 years of showing up for students 🎓

From classrooms to career pathways, teacher support to student opportunity, this timeline tells the story of what’s possible when a community chooses to invest in public education.

Collaboration is built into our name - founded from three organizations coming together with a shared mission to make Seattle Public Schools the best they can be.

Since then: every milestone crossed, every student supported, every barrier removed has been made possible by those who believe Seattle’s young people deserve every opportunity to thrive.

A few favorite moments from the photo booth 📸✨

Our community showed up in full force for this year’s gala, auction & after party! Together, we raised more than $450,000 to support students, educators and families in public schools across Seattle.

Like a forest canopy strengthened through interconnected roots, this work is only possible because of the collective care, generosity and belief of our community. Thank you for celebrating, giving and investing in a stronger future for every student.

More photos and moments to come! 💚

🗣️ Almost 25% of students in the city of Seattle (~20,000) are enrolled in a private school, one of the highest percentages of major US cities second only to San Francisco.

After visiting nearly every 104 Seattle Public Schools, Supt. Ben Shuldiner urges families to consider coming back. With new investments from the city and strategies for advanced learning, now is a powerful time for public schools in Seattle to step into their full potential! 🎓

From rental assistance to toiletries, the Right Now Needs Fund responds to struggling families’ requests in real time, filling gaps that fuel chronic absenteeism.

The Right Now Needs Fund is run by the Alliance for Education, an independent, local group that works to advance educational justice and racial equity for Seattle students. Since 1995, it’s invested $200 million in the city’s public schools.

The Fund, which started with a $2 million donation from Amazon, has delivered aid thousands of times throughout the years, helping families in the district’s 104 schools with everything from hygiene kits to rental assistance. It’s also boosted attendance.

Preparing and graduating great teachers who are ready on day one requires strong partnerships:

🎓The University of Washington College of Education for preparing future educators with their Masters In Teaching
🪧Seattle Education Association for advocating for and supporting teachers
💰the Alliance for investing in aspiring educators through funding for the program and scholarships to residents
🏫and the school district for mentorship placements, flexibility, and hands-on classroom experience

When institutions come together with a shared commitment to students, we create pathways for educators and students to thrive!

Ms. Monteiro is just one shining example of hundreds who have graduated from the program and still teaching years to a decade later in Seattle Public Schools!

87% of Seattle’s Title I schools have a Seattle Teacher Residency graduate in the classroom. That's an impact that reaches far beyond a single school day! 🍎✨

Research shows students benefit academically, socially and emotionally when they have teachers who reflect their own identity. That’s why Seattle Teacher Residency is so important: recruiting, preparing, and retaining diverse, highly-qualified educators for Seattle Public Schools.

A high quality teacher makes all the difference in the trajectory of a student's life. But many (future) educators of color aren’t encouraged to pursue teaching until much later in life.

STR is helping change that by creating pathways into the profession in our now 13th cohort and building a stronger, more representative teacher workforce for our students.

As Teacher Appreciation Week comes to a close, we’re celebrating every educator who shows students what’s possible simply by showing up. ❤️
