Last Saturday was Ready, Set, School! Volunteer Day at Dearborn Park International Elementary!

As a multilingual education school, they teach curriculum in English, Spanish and Mandarin! Meaning: there are 3x the workbooks, textbooks and supplies each year to unpack!

This mighty group of volunteers helped ready the school and donated enough school supplies for EVERY student to start the year off strong and not need to break the bank doing it.

Last Friday we organized a group of volunteers who spent an afternoon at Lowell Elementary preparing and beautifying the school for students to return back to school! 🏫🥰

Volunteers decorated bulletin boards, prepared family welcome packets, cleaned up outdoor trash and stocked family resource room shelves with OVER 2,000 donated items!!

Principal Chelsea shared with volunteers about the array of barriers students at Lowell experience that make the school a very special place and this afternoon of volunteering even more impactful.

If you didn't know: Lowell has a large attendance boundary that covers all of downtown and lots of Capitol Hill. The school community is comprised of many families facing housing and food insecurity in these expensive neighborhoods; diverse special ed and medically fragile programs for students; families that speak many languages and are empowered to bring their cultures with them; and travel pretty far to get to school each day.

Still: Students succeed because of the many Seattle Teacher Residency graduates who teach at Lowell, dedicated leaders like Principal Chelsea who galvanize resources to fill gaps, and a caring community that shows up over and over for Lowell students.

Three Seattle Public Schools need extra hands to spruce up their campuses, and the Alliance is lining up volunteers to help!

Our “Ready, Set, School” volunteer days will send volunteers to each campus for half-day shifts on August 21 & 29, aiming to have classrooms and campuses ready by the start of school.

Cohort 14 residents closed out their summer experience of visiting with community leaders and local museums last week! We ended at Sea Mar Museum of Chicano/a/latino/a Culture. The exhibit is a living, breathing testament to Washington's Chicano community and movement leaders.

We had a riveting discussion at the museum and reflecting afterward on:
🚌 how to scaffold information for students when they attend field trips
🏛️ understanding how institutions grapple with framing history and evolve when new information is learned
🪧 the deep roots and role of activism our public schools have had in Seattle's contemporary history
