After being ignored by local politicians for years, thank you Heidi Wills for taking an interest in one of Seattle's most famous landmarks, the Edith Macefield House. If you love this house and Edith's story, then vote for Heidi in November for Seattle City Council! She cares. Volunteers welcome: https://heidiwills.com/support/
The Edith Macefield House endorsed my campaign today based on my shared values with Edith of dogged determination and fierce independence. Edith refused to sell her home for $1 million because she said no amount of money meant more to her than her home, so developers built around her, resulting in the “Up” house next to my children’s martial arts studio in Ballard.
As we welcome new neighbors and development in our growing city, it’s important to be mindful that gentrification changes the face of our community. Who leaves? Who stays? Who moves in? Listening to and collaborating with competing interests is critically important.
As PAC money and independent expenditures from various special interests try to influence voters in our election, I am proud to run a grassroots campaign. I embraced the democracy voucher program and have the most democracy vouchers in my race.
I’m my own thinker who is running to do what’s best for our community and to change the status quo. How can I not be? I’m a mom. I’m a community leader. I’m a small business owner, and I’m a former non-profit director. I have broad support from business and labor, from the Sierra Club and The Seattle Times. Edith was steadfast in her commitment to place. I’ll be steadfast in my commitment to the people of D6, not to special interests.
It’s said that a person dies twice: once when buried, and then again when the last person says their name. Edith Macefield’s name will live for a long time.
