Sebago Historical Society

Sebago Historical Society Our building is located at 347 Convene Road in Sebago. It was built in 1844 as the Freewill Baptist Church. You can still sit in the original pews! Come visit us!

One hundred years later it became the Nazarene Church. In 1996 the town of Sebago purchased the building for the Historical Society. The building is open for visitors on the 2nd Saturday and 4th Sunday of June, July and August from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm. We have many displays, photos and interesting objects relating to the history of the Town of Sebago that we would like to share with you. You may

also visit at other times by appointment. The Historical Society meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm. You are very welcome to join us. Membership dues are just $10 per year. As a member, you will receive our quarterly newsletter, Sebago Echoes. You will also meet some very interesting people who have fascinating stories to tell about Sebago history and who are interested in preserving that history.

The Sebago Historical Society’s next program will be MAIL DELIVERY IN SEBAGO - IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS. Diana Letellier, one of our older members, will be recounting her experiences as a contract carrier, with memories of stories that her grandfather told her when he delivered mail.
Join us for a look back down memory lane at what some of you never knew existed – reliable mail delivery.
Pictured is Al Martin, Diana's grandfather, carrying the bag of mail up Wiggin's Hill in N. Baldwin. They didn't plow the road, so he had to carry it through the snow to the Post Office.

Saturday March 7, 2 PM Spaulding Memorial Library.

The Sebago Historical Society will host a program about the ice cutting trade in Sebago and surrounding towns. We will begin with a short vintage video that documents how large-scale operations worked in the early 20th century, then look at photos and equipment from local sites.
This picture shows an early operation on Sebago Lake.
Program is free, but donations always welcome.

Today is Sebago's 200th Birthday!

On October 31, 1825, seventy-five citizens on the northeastern side of the town of Baldwin submitted a petition to the Maine Legislature, asking to be separated from Baldwin and established as a new town. The petition was incorporated into an Act that passed the legislature in January 1826 and was signed into law by Governor Parris on
February 10, 1826.

The petition opens:
To the Hon. Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Maine in Legislature assembled. We the Subscribers, Inhabitants of the Town of Baldwin in the County of Cumberland, ask leave to represent that said Town of Baldwin contains a territory of more than seven miles square and that its situation is such that the inhabitants thereof cannot be accommodated in one town, that some part of them are obliged to travel more than twelve miles to Town meetings and a large mountain running through nearly the center of said Town which renders it impractible for them to have any place of meeting in the center of the town.

Party tonight!
The town is holding a celebration tonight at the Town Gym. See all the details here: https://www.townofsebago.org
