The expansion of Florida’s coastal communities requires a collective effort to preserve our unique biodiversity and natural environments.

Sea turtles face a multitude of threats from humans, with artificial lighting being one of the most serious, affecting both hatchlings and nesting turtles.

🚨 REMINDER: Summer Fertilizer Bans Begin June 1 Across Most of the Indian River Lagoon Watershed 🚨

Starting tomorrow, June 1, summer fertilizer restrictions take effect in most counties, cities, and towns throughout the Indian River Lagoon watershed.

These ordinances are designed to reduce the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus washing into our waterways during Florida's rainy season. Excess nutrients fuel algae blooms that damage seagrass, harm wildlife, and degrade water quality in the Indian River Lagoon.

🌿 We know some residents question whether fertilizer bans are fair when there are many other sources of nutrient pollution impacting the Lagoon. That's a valid concern. Septic systems, wastewater infrastructure, stormwater runoff, legacy sediments, agricultural runoff, and other sources also contribute nutrients to the system and require continued attention and investment.

At the same time, fertilizer ordinances were never intended to be the only solution. They are one tool among many.

Reducing nutrient pollution from residential landscapes during the rainy season is a practical step that communities can take while broader restoration efforts continue.

Protecting the Indian River Lagoon requires action from everyone: homeowners, businesses, farmers, developers, local governments, state agencies, and environmental organizations alike. No single action will restore the balance between algae & seagrass in the Lagoon, but many actions working together can make a meaningful difference.

📍 Residents should check the specific ordinance that applies where they live, as requirements can vary somewhat by county, city, and town.

💧 Every pound of nutrients kept out of the water is one less pound available to fuel algae blooms.

💚 Thank you to everyone who does their part to help reduce nutrient pollution and protect the Indian River Lagoon for future generations.

Great news for the Indian River Lagoon 🌱💧

Updated data from the St. Johns River Water Management District (https://www.sjrwmd.com/2026/05/district-releases-updated-seagrass-data-showing-continued-expansion/) shows continued seagrass expansion, a powerful sign that restoration efforts are making a real difference for our waterways, wildlife, and communities. Seagrasses are essential to lagoon health, helping improve water quality while providing essential estuarine habitat.

This progress reflects years of collaboration, science-based restoration, and community commitment across the Indian River Lagoon region. Every acre restored helps strengthen one of Florida’s most important ecosystems for future generations.

Thank you to all the scientists, conservation partners, local governments, nonprofits, educators, volunteers, residents and businesses helping turn the tide for the lagoon.

Seven miles of trails with kiosks, boardwalks and observation towers provide family-friendly wildlife viewing. Being flat land, the refuge offers easy walks and a ¾-mile Centennial Trail with a view of Pelican Island that's Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant.

Thank you TCPalm for the great article highlighting a local gem, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge 😎

Hello PICS members and friends of Pelican Island NWR!

The bad news is our sunset wine and cheese cruise to Pelican Island this weekend, as part of our 123rd anniversary celebration of Pelican Island, is sold out. The good news, though, is the weather looks like it will be gorgeous.

We’re sorry if you weren’t able to grab a seat on our cruise, but President Theodore Roosevelt will be with us for the entire weekend of celebration. You will find all of us at the Tiki Bar on Friday and the Refuge on Saturday and Sunday to greet everyone.

Happy Belated Birthday Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge!! 🌿

Festivities begin Friday evening with a casual event at the Tiki Bar & Grill on the Lagoon in Sebastian. President Roosevelt will be there from 5 to 7pm to meet patrons for some great camaraderie and storytelling. Stop by to say hi and take your picture with Teddy. He’s quite shy, you know! You’ll find all the details of the weekend’s events on our website at www.firstrefuge.org/anniversary or on our Facebook events!

Happy birthday to the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Back in 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt set aside a small island in Florida called Pelican Island to protect nesting birds. That one decision kicked off what would become a nationwide network of protected lands dedicated to wildlife.

Today, the Refuge System includes more than 570 national wildlife refuges across the United States. These places protect critical habitat for birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and plants, while also giving people a chance to connect with the outdoors.

Check out these numbers. National wildlife refuges receive:

🦌2.63 million annual hunting visits
🐟8.61 million annual fishing visits
🚶‍➡️4,197 miles of public trails and boardwalks, water and snow included
🚗7,352 lane miles of public roads

From quiet marshes and coastal estuaries to sweeping prairies and desert landscapes, these lands were set aside for wildlife, but they also welcome people who want to recreate, hunt, fish, photograph wildlife, and explore.

Happy birthday to the refuges.
