Did you know? We modeled our 100th Anniversary Service Project after the first project the first Rotary Club did in Chicago? It's true! They saw a need in their community and did something about it. We saw a need down on the Circle, which caters to many big events throughout the year and didn't have public restrooms close by.

It is part of what Rotary does: give back to the community!

A week ago today, we had a very successful golf tournament. Part of that success was from the support of the SGSC Rotaract Club.

Many don't know that Rotary also serves youth and young adults. Rotaract is for young adults, generally college-aged individuals who seek the ideals of Rotary, Service Above Self.

Our local Rotaract club is stellar. They help out at so many different fundraising functions, as well as mount their own fundraising activities. They are always, always giving back, and we sure to appreciate them!

They acted as the welcoming committee at our event. They helped out at the Raffle table. They gave our golfers a big send off by cheering them on. And they spent the day taking pictures of our golfers.

The club is led by Sari Crews, who is a one woman dynamo She has so much spirit, energy, and light! She truly has a servant heart.

Thank you for helping make our event successful!

We will post pictures from Saturday's golf tournament soon! Our Rotaract club from SFSC did an awesome job again this year, and once they are submitted, we will share them with you all. Thanks for your patience.

We will also be posting the slides showing ALL of our amazing sponsors! It takes a lot of money up front to pull this off each year, so make sure you help us thank those businesses for their support!

Pretty sure most of us do not truly know the economic impact that South Florida State College has on the counties that it serves.

President Fred Hawkins gave us a wonderful presentation showing us how the community benefits.

Of the 513 employees, 82% live in the communities that SFSC serves. They pay taxes in the community, they buy goods and services in the community, they raise families in the community.

One out of every 24 jobs in the SFSC service area is supported in some way by SFSC and its students. In fact, of there are nearly 3000 jobs in this region who benefit from the education provided SFSC. SFSC has added over $210 million in income to the region--that is money spent right here by graduates of an SFSC program!

President Hawkins showed that there is a 22.9% return on investment from SFSC. For every dollar invested in an education, the student gains $7.50 from that $1 investment. That is a pretty good return. Society gains even more: $9.40 for every dollar invested in SFSC!

That's that good news. President Hawkins also shared some not so good news. They had to turn away over 500 students because there is not enough funding to pay for instructors. They have the capacity to add classes, but the State only added $1 million to SFSC budget; SFSC needed a minimum of $3 million. He hates turning away students, and believes Highlands County, Hardee County, and DeSoto County deserve better.

Hawkins stated that SFSC has not raised tuition in over 13 years. He believes in keeping the cost down, especially since our county's median income is well below coastal counties.

The New Testament Mission has been really busy! Director Katie Beatty shared that last month, they served over 6300 meals. Just this week, they served 90 plus people at each meal. The needs keep rising.

According to Katie, they have raised 78% of the funds needed for the expansion, which will add 7 double-occupancy rooms. She states they are so full, they have people sleeping in the yard because they have nowhere else to go.

The mission has passed the 50 year mark, and Katie says they are seeing more and more homeless coming from out of county. She also says they are serving more and more meals to seniors who just can't afford food to feed themselves.

Katie says the non-profit gets zero governmental help. They depend 100% on donations of food, toiletries, bedding, etc.

If you would like to help out by donating food, money, or time, please contact the mission at 863-385-0035
