Sedalia Fire is introducing our Good Samaritan cards. These cards are carried on the fire apparatus and handed out to people of our community who help during another community members medical emergency. The best example to use is someone starting CPR before medical services have arrived. These cards recognize the trauma that can come with helping in a situation that might not have the desired outcomes. It has links to resources to help work through these emotions. We want to thank Colerain Township Department of Fire and EMS out of Ohio for the idea and help getting these cards implemented.

Firefighter Beard wants to serve a full career in the fire service and is vocally proud to be able to serve his hometown in this capacity.

When asked what got him into the fire service, Beard said, "It seemed to be an exciting career. I like the thrill. I stayed around because I fell in love with serving my community.". What happens after crews leave a fire scene? Great question! All crews and units report to Fire Headquarters for the decontamination process. Smoke and fire produce a lot of cancer causing carcinogens and it is vital for crews to clean for their safety. Crews clean every tool, piece of equipment, length of hose, apparatus, gear, and anything else that was used on the fire scene. They will then restock, refill, inspect and repair, and do anything they need to do to be able to return all units back to service. This process is just as important as any other step in the fire and emergency services response. We need to ensure we are properly prepared for the next call that comes! After all of this, crews will then start the debriefing process. This a time when we review everything that happened from first tone to final apparatus returning to service. We go over what went good, what needs improving, tactics and strategies, policy and procedure, and other logistical and operational aspects. We also make sure everyone is okay, physically and mentally. This can be a tough career and sometimes people need support. *EACH picture has its own description on it describing what is happening in the picture*

Today, Tomorrow, and Friday you might see crews at Liberty Park in the afternoon. The department is doing its yearly ice rescue training on each one of the shifts. This gives us a chance to sharpen our skills and practice the basics, test and inspect our gear, and try new methods of rescue we have studied over the winter season. Each photo has a unique caption that explains what is going on in that specific photo.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sedalia Municipal Building Delayed Opening – January 6th, 2025

The City of Sedalia has announced that the Sedalia Municipal Building will delay its opening until 10:00 AM on Monday, January 6th, 2025. This decision was made to allow city crews adequate time to clear sidewalks and parking lots, ensuring safe access for both employees and visitors. Additionally, this delay is intended to support safer travel conditions for all residents following the recent winter storm.

The City of Sedalia encourages all community members to exercise caution while traveling and to remain vigilant as crews work diligently to address the effects of the weather.

The safety and well-being of Sedalia’s residents remain the City’s top priority. We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the community as we navigate these weather-related challenges together.

01/05/2025

Crews are working a structure fire at 11th and Center. We hope it is the last of this winter event. With furnaces working hard to keep, space heaters, and other alternative heating methods being used we are sadly predicting more.

We have added additional staffing in anticipation. Please be safe. If breakers are tripping please unplug items.

With a harsh and cold, snowy storm predicted for our area, we have some winter safety tips we would like to share to help keep people safe and informed.

When you are outside, frostbite and hypothermia are possible so you need to protect yourself.
1. Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.
2. Wear a hat. Try to stay dry and out of the wind.
3. Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
4. Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.

To keep pipes from freezing on an outside wall:
1. Let hot and cold water trickle or drip at night from a faucet.
2. Open cabinet doors to allow more heat to get to un-insulated pipes under a sink or near an outer wall.
3. Make sure heat is left on and set no lower than 55 degrees.
4. If you plan to be away: (1) Have someone check your house daily to make sure the heat is still on to prevent freezing, or (2) drain and shut off the water system (except indoor sprinkler systems).

If Pipes Freeze:
1. Make sure you and your family knows how to shut off the water, in case pipes burst.
2. NEVER try to thaw a pipe with an open flame or torch. Use a hair dryer instead.
3. Always be careful of the potential for electric shock in and around standing water.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is a silent, deadly killer claiming about 1,000 lives each year in the United States.
1. Install a carbon monoxide detector.
2. NEVER run generators indoors.
3. Open a window slightly when using a kerosene heater and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
4. NEVER use a gas oven to heat your home.
5. If your heat goes out, you can keep warm indoors by closing off rooms you do not need, dressing in layers of lightweight clothing, and wearing a cap.

Wood-burning stoves, fireplaces and heaters:
1. Always keep a screen around an open flame.
2. NEVER use gasoline to start your fireplace.
3. NEVER burn charcoal indoors.
4. Do not close the damper when ashes are hot.
5. Use only safe sources of alternative heat such as a fireplace, small well-vented wood or coal stove or portable space heaters. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Animal and Pet Safety:
1. Bring pets inside
2. Provide shelter and fresh water
3. Keep salt away from paws

Vehicle Preparation:
1. Check you battery
2. Check your fluids (coolant, wiper fluid, oil, etc)
3. Check your tires
4. Have jumper cables
5. Pack a blanket
6. Have a safety kit with basic first aid and some food

Close before you doze, your safety hinges on it! Our new fire prevention campaign is underway. Fire prevention personnel were able to source this material for FREE from Underwriters Laboratories and their Fire Safety Research Institute. We will be partnering with schools and local organizations to distribute this material and have educational classes on the importance of closing your bedroom doors before falling asleep. Feel free to reach out to the department for more information, educational opportunities, or fire prevention material.
