Quick testament to fire extinguishers and why they matter.
Customer’s (apartments) tenant had a fire in the kitchen. Fire quickly got out of control and got hot enough to drop the fire sprinkler cover plate (135 degree). The tenant acted quickly and grabbed a 2.5lb ABC mounted under the kitchen sink and put the fire out before it popped the sprinkler head - preventing further fire, smoke, & water damage as well as possibly saving lives.
This particular apartment complex has 2.5lb ABCs in every unit and not in cabinets outside the units. I believe that if the extinguishers were outside the unit, this fire would have gotten to the point of activating the sprinkler head. To add to the excitement, we were servicing this customers entire fire systems and extinguishers the very same day as the fire. The fire occurred about 45 mins after we left the property. In fact, we replaced a painted head in the very same building that day.
Luckily, in this case, the fire department wasn’t needed to fight the fire. Also of note, the recently serviced and repaired fire sprinkler system wasn’t needed... OR the recently serviced and repaired fire alarm system... OR the recently serviced and repaired exit/emergency lighting for building evacuation. None of these additional last resort life saving equipment were necessary (but could have very well been) all due to a properly maintained (non-leaker) fire extinguisher. 🧯
In summary:
1). What you do matters and does make a difference in people’s lives.
2.) Fire extinguishers and proper fire extinguisher maintenance matter.
3.) Be mindful that fires can happen anytime and won’t stop, even if we’re on site. When servicing fire equipment, you are on ”fire watch” for that property.
4.) NEVER leave a property without placing any fire sprinkler/alarm systems back in service with the central station monitoring AND the fire department dispatch.
At the end of the day, we did everything right and our customer is better off because of it. Couldn’t be more proud of our team and HUGE kuddos to the tenant for acting quick and preventing further disaster or tragedy.
