Cattle drives from Texas pushed north across the plains, bringing thousands of longhorns into Missouri—fueling local markets and helping shape the early economy of our region.

🚂 All Aboard the History of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad! 🇺🇸
Known as the “Katy,” the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad helped shape communities across the Midwest—including right here in Sedalia. Established in 1865, the Katy became one of the first railroads to push south into Texas, opening new routes for trade, travel, and opportunity.
By the late 1800s, Sedalia had become a key hub for the Katy, with the Sedalia Katy Depot serving as both a passenger station and division headquarters. From cattle drives and freight shipments to families heading out on new adventures, the rails carried it all.
Though passenger service eventually faded, the Katy’s legacy lives on. Today, much of the former rail line has been transformed into the scenic Katy Trail State Park—the longest developed rail-trail in the country—where thousands now walk, run, and ride the same path once traveled by trains.

Look Out!!

UPDATE: Trail work will NOT be occurring April 20-23rd. Enjoy the trail!

We are working on resurfacing parts of the Katy Trail!
This does mean that the Katy Trail will be CLOSED from MP 88.8 (Bernheimer Rd) to MP 96.8 (Massas Creek) to allow us time and space to conduct this vital work.
This closure will be in effect from Monday, April 13th, through Thursday, April 16th. Then again starting Monday, April 20th, through Thursday, April 23rd.
