Today we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Their courage, dedication, and selfless commitment to protecting our freedoms will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, we remember those who gave everything so that we may live in freedom.

We remember. We honor. We are grateful.

Attention West Douglas County Fire district residents.

West Douglas was paged out tonight for a smoke investigation in the area of Indian Creek campground. Upon arrival we located a wildland fire that is approximately 10 acres in size near bear creek about 2 miles northwest of the Indian Creek campground.

Crews evaluated the scene and determined the fire is very slow moving and not posing a significant threat to the area at this time.

The USFS is taking over as this fire is on federal land. You can expect to see heavy activity from both the ground and the air at 6am.

Winds are calm and temps are cool, winds are forecasted to stay calm through tomorrow evening so significant growth is not anticipated.

We will continue to monitor the situation and assist as needed and district residents can rest assured that we are doing everything we can to keep this fire from growing and ultimately to see that it is out cold.

At this time we have not determined a cause, however given the proximity to the 800 trail and area use by hikers and campers, we are investigating this as suspected human caused.

As always, we thank you for your support, and while it is unsettling anytime we have a fire, please know that evacuations are not anticipated.

It's going to be a long summer.

The good news is we have some cooler more seasonal weather moving into the area but the bad news is it's causing yet another inversion pushing smoke from the fires down south down and to the east to ground level in our area.

You may smell smoke and see the haze but there are no fires within our district at this time.

Be advised that due to the fires down south in El Paso county we have the strong smell of wildfire smoke in our district.

As always, if you see wildfire or a plume you should notify 911 immediately.

District residents and area visitors are also reminded that the sheriff has us under Stage 1 restrictions and stage 2 is being considered.

Be smart folks, don't take a chance with fire, it is way too dry.
