๐ Reading is not just about imagination, inspiration, and education. It is also a great way to bond with children and spark their interests on a multitude of levels. ๐
๐ซ Dolly Partonโs inspiration stemmed from her father who was never taught to read or write and potentially created hurdles for him as he faced adulthood. Dolly realized the importance of children not only learning to read and write at a young age but also having access to books.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library was then born; initially just in Dollyโs home county in Tennessee! โบ๏ธ

#BlackHistoryMonth is understood as a time where we celebrate the achievements of the Black and African American community to honor their contributions to our society and culture. Itโs important to remember that Black History is being made right now today, tomorrow and the future. The actions we take today, creates the future we desire.
Please join us in honoring @angelafwilliams as one of the acclaimed honorees in The @Microsoft Legacy Project of 2022. She will be featured in an immersive virtual museum that highlights current Black and African American history makers creating pathways and opening doors for the legacies that will follow.

Mission:Unite People and Resources To Improve Lives In Our Community.
Vision: To Be The Trusted Platform For Creating Community Solutions In Pettis County.
United Way of Pettis County Initiatives: Mental Health and Substance Abuse, Childhood Development & Hunger
1. The United Way of Pettis County has a proud tradition of nearly 60 years of service to Pettis County. It was founded in order to provide the most cost-effective method of raising funds for the county's basic charitable organizations. Our United Way accomplished this goal 60 years ago, and it continues to do so today.
2. We are a member of United Way Worldwide. The role of the International association is to assist and serve local United Ways - not the other way around. Our local United Way is completely autonomous. We choose the agencies and initiatives that will be a part of the support we provide year round to include the annual campaign. United Way Board of Directors determines the grant allocation based on programming and impact to Pettis County. All decisions are made locally.
3. Dues paid to United Way Worldwide have been completely voluntary, and annually amount to just 1% of the amount pledged in the campaign. We pay these dues and in return we receive goods, services, and national publicity worth far more than the amount we pay.
4. The Board of Directors is the governing body of our local United Way. Each Director is elected by Pettis County citizens at an annual meeting. Our Board is a cross section of the community - teachers, lawyers, industry workers, government employees, large and small business owners, and retired people. They are the people who make the decisions regarding the operation of the Sedalia-Pettis County United Way.
5. Your local United Way is the original low budget operation. It is run by volunteers who generate funding for important programming in Pettis County, support initiative , make policy, set goals, and budget funds. The money you contribute to United Way is used to meet the needs of people in our community.
6. Our United Way has one full-time paid employee and one part-time paid employee. Together this 1.5 person team handles our accounting and correspondence, acts as liaison between our agencies and the public, and assists our volunteer Board and Campaign Cabinet. They also manage the UWPC web-site, Dolly Parton Imagination Library, coordinate UWPC workgroups and community meetings, raises dollars and keeps track of donations, and attends partner agency meetings. This team identifies collaborative options to work toward solutions to issues in Pettis County.
7. In order to be accepted as an agency of the United Way of Pettis County, organizations annually submit financial statements, summaries of programs and other information to United Way's Budget Committee. The Committee is comprised of members of the Board. When they are accepted as a United Way agency they are held strictly accountable for the funds they receive. They are required to submit quarterly reports with written documentation as to how the money they received was spent. The agencies are accountable to United Way and United Way is accountable to everyone who makes a donation.
8. Many local businesses offer their employees the option of payroll deduction. Please consider this option if it is available to you.
A small amount from each paycheck adds up to a significant gift. And remember your gift will stay in our community to help those in need, and improve the quality of life for us all.
Our Partner Agency United Way of Pettis County is hosting this event! Please make plans to attend!
Our Volunteer Coordinator, Jamie met with Samantha Gilpin, director of our funded partner, United Way of Pettis County this morning.
Jamie gave Samantha a tour of the Open Door Thrift Shop today to show her how their operations run. The thrift store runs on volunteers from the community. Our Volunteers sort, organize, and tag the donations as well as making sure the donations get to the floor and keep the sales floor straightened. Samantha will be volunteering her time to help Open Door Service Center further their mission in Pettis County.
If you would like more information on Open Door Service Center or the United Way, you can reach out to Samantha at [email protected] or Jamie at [email protected] or 660-827-1613 with questions!
The nonprofit, Advancing Parenting, would like to share a rather unusual and free resource for promoting positive childhood experiences and preventing adverse childhood experiences.
Parenting Norms Bumper Stickers
Advancing Parenting makes them available at no cost to United Ways so they can in turn make them available to partner organizations, agencies, and businesses. There are fifty-two in a set and each sticker communicates a parenting behavior or practice generally recognized as supporting the healthy development of children. Just one will be read thousands of times!
Bumper stickers are a unique and powerful way for friends, family, and community members to share parenting wisdom. At stoplights drivers and passengers point, smile, and nod. Conversations begin and often a phone is used to take a photo of the sticker right at the stoplight. Presumably, they are being shared on social media. It's wonderful to see!
Sets of the stickers can be given away at events and/or put in holders and placed on counters in waiting rooms and offices so folks can select one for their cars.
Visit www.advancingparenting.org to request this free resource and be placed on the waiting list. Please share.
