Tornado Siren Test Announcement The County storm sirens will be tested today, Monday May 4th at 12:00pm (noon), Chautauqua County Sheriff Dispatch will be conducting a county wide tornado siren test. Intentions of Sirens Tornado sirens have been installed to alert the citizens of Chautauqua County who may be outdoors during the time a tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service . The sirens are not intended to alert people indoors during a warning. It is highly recommended that each residence, business, school and church purchase weather alert radios that are automatically activated during severe weather occurrences. Using Sirens in a Tornado Warning If the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning for an area in Chautauqua County, the sirens will sound continuously, in the forecasted impact area, for 3 minutes. The sirens will then silence for 5 to 7 minutes and again sound for 3 minutes. This cycle will continue throughout the warning time period. When the warning has expired or has been canceled, the sirens will silence. Note: There is no all clear signal or sound, when the warning has been canceled or the warning time has expired. DO NOT CALL THE SHERIFF’S DISPATCH TO SEE WHY THE SIRENS ARE SOUNDING. YOU SHOULD SEEK SHELTER. IF THE SIREN IS SOUNDING AT ANY TIME OTHER THAN THE MONTHLY TEST IT IS BECAUSE WE ARE UNDER A TORNADO WARNING.

Chautauqua County Emergency Management and 911 Implement CAPSOL Mass Notification System
Chautauqua County Emergency Management, in coordination with Chautauqua County 911 Communications, has implemented CAPSOL, a new countywide mass notification system designed to enhance emergency communications and improve public safety.
The CAPSOL system provides Emergency Management and 911 dispatchers with the ability to rapidly send critical alerts to residents during emergencies. Notifications will be delivered through an app based system to smart phones, ensuring timely dissemination of life-saving information. Unlike our previous emergency alerting system, the CAPSOL app does not require your personal information (name, number, email) to send alerts. Please see below for more instructions.

CAPSOL will be used by Emergency Management and 911/dispatch personnel to support response operations during events such as:
• Missing or endangered person alerts
• Road closures and infrastructure emergencies
• Evacuations and shelter-in-place notifications
• Other time-sensitive public safety incidents
Residents are encouraged to download the app and enter the county code for alerts to ensure they receive emergency alerts specific to Chautauqua County KS. This is voluntary but strongly recommended to support effective emergency response and community safety.
To receive alerts, scan the QR code below or visit www.chautauquacountyks.com/emergency-management/pages/sign-alerts or contact Chautauqua County Emergency Management at 620-725-3108 or [email protected]
Chautauqua County Emergency Management and 911 Communications remain committed to protecting lives and property through preparedness, rapid response, and clear, timely communication.

All joking aside, this is a very serious storm headed our way. Get your running done today and gather any necessary supplies. Prepare for possible energy shortages or even outages. Check on loved ones, the elderly and other vulnerable people in your area. Ensure your electronics are charged and think about what you may need in the event of a power outage where travel may be impossible. Here are some essential tips in the event of power loss:

Essential Heat Retention & Safety:

• Stay in One Room
• Gather in one room, preferably on a higher floor as heat rises, and close off unused rooms to conserve heat.
• Insulate Doors/Windows: Use towels, blankets, or rugs to block drafts under doors and over window cracks.
•Layer Up: Wear multiple layers of clothing, including hats, mittens, and scarves, to retain body heat.
• Safety First: Never use generators, charcoal grills, or camp stoves indoors, as they produce deadly carbon monoxide.
• Safe Heating: Only use fireplaces or wood stoves if they are properly ventilated and up to code.
• Food and Water Safety
Keep Fridge/Freezer Closed: A closed refrigerator keeps food cold for 4 hours; a full freezer maintains temperature for 48 hours.
•Use Outdoor Cold: Keep food in a cooler outside or in a cold garage.
• Hydration: Drink fluids, but avoid caffeine or alcohol, as they can cause dehydration and lower body temperature.

Preventing Hypothermia and Pipe Freezing:

•Monitor Health: Watch for signs of hypothermia (shivering, slurred speech, memory loss) and frostbite (numbness, white/pale skin).
• Protect Pipes: Open cabinets under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes, and let faucets drip slightly to prevent freezing.

Preparation Tips (If Power Is Not Yet Out):

• Charge phones, laptops, and portable power banks.
• Fill bathtubs with water for cleaning and toilet flushing.
• Have flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio ready.

Most of all, do everything you can to be self sufficient for your particular needs. It may be very difficult or even impossible for emergency services to reach you.
