As you age, do you ever feel "invisible," or discounted. Do you bristle when a younger person calls you "honey" or "sweetie?" How likely is it for a company to hire someone over 60? The Boomer generation is huge and we can do something about "ageism."

Ageism Awareness Day is Oct. 9, 2024.

AmeriCorps Senior Newsletter ...

Our America Reads Volunteer Tutors are Protecting the Future!

As millions of students across the country return to school, they’ll be joined by thousands of AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers who will provide students with the academic, social, and emotional support they need to succeed. For 30 years, AmeriCorps and its partners have been placing caring, capable people in schools and out of school time programs to support children and students of all ages.

Millions of AmeriCorps alumni have served as tutors, mentors, post-secondary transition coaches, afterschool program leaders, and educators to guide students to long-term success in college, careers, and life. This critical people power not only fuels improved student outcomes, but also provides pathways from service to the education workforce.

Each year, AmeriCorps invests about half of its funding in programs that support students of all ages – from Head Start to adult education. And we partner with other public agencies, the private sector, and philanthropy to amplify the impact of national service. That’s why we launched the National Partnership for Student Success in 2022 to recruit 250,000 additional adults into support roles. And it’s why earlier this year we announced the creation of the nation’s first Youth Mental Health Corps to meet the needs of young people now while providing onramps for AmeriCorps members into behavioral health careers.

As you support young people in returning to school, we encourage you to utilize these key resources for beginning of year activities.

Student Attendance: Parents want their children to do well in school but may not fully understand the connection between chronic absences and a student’s academic achievement. It’s critical that students start the school year with strong attendance to establish good habits. Visit Attendance Works to download ready-to-use resources, including information on making the case about why attendance matters, handouts for families, and tools to create student success plans.

Childhood Vaccinations: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found dropping rates of vaccination coverage put children at greater risk for illness, including serious illness and hospitalization. There has been a 2 percent drop in kindergarten vaccination coverage since the start of the pandemic, which means 725,000 children who entered kindergarten during the pandemic are susceptible to vaccine-preventable disease. The CDC’s Routine Immunizations on Schedule for Everyone is an initiative to get routine immunizations back on track.

Establishing Routines: The American Academy of Pediatrics has extensive back-to-school tips for families on topics ranging from reducing student anxiety to developing health sleep and nutrition practices. These resources are also available in Spanish. AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers can use these checklists to guide introductory conversations with students and families.

Celebrate Wellness and Connection!

This August, as we celebrate Senior Citizen Day and National Wellness Month, let's embrace a lifestyle of health and connection. Here are some tips to enhance your well-being and social engagement:

Explore Local Events:
Senior Citizen Day Activities: Visit local community centers or senior centers to find special events, workshops, and social gatherings celebrating Senior Citizen Day. Many communities host free or discounted activities like art classes, musical performances, or outdoor picnics tailored for seniors.

Parks and Recreation: Check with your local parks department for events such as nature walks, outdoor concerts, or fitness classes specifically designed for older adults.

Virtual Meetups:
Online Social Groups: Join virtual groups or clubs based on your interests, whether it’s a book club, crafting group, or discussion forum. Websites like Meetup.com or local library online programs often offer virtual social opportunities.
Family Connection: Set up regular video calls with family members or friends using platforms like Zoom or Skype. Virtual family game nights or shared online activities can keep you engaged and connected.

Stay Active:
GoGo’s Virtual Fitness Classes: Join our weekly virtual fitness classes designed for seniors. These classes offer gentle exercises that improve flexibility, balance, and strength. It’s a great way to stay active from the comfort of your home.

Local Exercise Groups: Look for senior exercise groups or low-impact classes at your local gym or community center. Activities like water aerobics, tai chi, or chair yoga can be excellent choices.

Healthy Eating:
Seasonal Produce: Take advantage of August’s bounty by incorporating fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables into your diet. Consider visiting farmers' markets for the freshest produce like peaches, tomatoes, and corn.

Balanced Diet: Focus on a well-rounded diet with lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Avoid excessive salt, sugar, and processed foods. Prepare meals with nutrient-rich ingredients to support overall health.

Self-Care:
Mindfulness and Relaxation: Practice mindfulness techniques such as meditation or deep-breathing exercises to manage stress. Apps like Headspace or Calm can guide you through relaxation routines.
Hobbies and Interests: Dedicate time to hobbies that bring you joy, whether it's gardening, painting, or playing a musical instrument. Engaging in activities you love can enhance mental well-being.

Social Activities:
Volunteer Opportunities: Consider volunteering for local organizations or causes you care about. It’s a fulfilling way to give back to the community and meet like-minded individuals.
Social Clubs: Join local clubs or classes that match your interests, such as cooking classes, book clubs, or social dance groups. These activities provide opportunities for socializing and learning new skills.

Remember, celebrating wellness is about staying active, engaged, and connected. Whether you’re attending events, participating in virtual meetups, or focusing on healthy living, GoGo is here to support you every step of the way.

NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!

This is a work-from-home volunteer project that supports and comforts people impacted by disasters.

Operation Ornaments is a non-profit organization on a mission to bring comfort and joy to families devastated by wildfires and natural disasters. With a heartfelt approach, we provide tangible reminders of love and support through handmade ornaments and personalized notes. Join us in making a difference by visiting our website and/or page to learn more and contribute to our cause. Together, we can ensure that survivors know they are not alone and have not been forgotten.

Volunteers play a crucial role by crafting handmade ornaments of their choice, each crafted with care and creativity and individually packaged with personalized notes of support and the location where they were created. These ornaments, along with their heartfelt messages, are then sent to a central location where they are organized into packs, ensuring that each bundle represents diverse locations and communities.

Over the past five years, we've touched the lives of over 5,000 families with over 70,000 ornaments crafted throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, U.S. diplomats serving in China, and Ukrainian refugees. In 2024 we will serve survivors in Tennessee, Mississippi, Ohio, Guam, (military and local families), and Lahaina Hawaii, we invite you to join us in making a difference. Learn more about our mission and how you can get involved on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1130528510770698 or our website https://operationornaments.org/instructions/ With questions email [email protected]

Ornament Instructions IMPORTANT! Our wonderful coordinators are unpaid volunteers, often with other jobs and obligations to fulfill in addition to the work they do for us. Each year, they spend countless hours packaging, re-packaging, tagging, re-shipping, counting, and doctoring donation shipments....
