Dan Peters for Selah Schools

Dan Peters for Selah Schools For the Re-election of Dan Peters to the Selah School board. I am running for School Board At-Large Position 2 and I wanted to introduce myself.

I was born and raised in Selah and graduated from Selah High in 1987. After college, my wife and I moved back to Selah in 1996. We’ve lived in our house on Hillcrest for 20 years. We have two children in the Selah School District. Our daughter just finished her first year of college and our son in 11th grade at Selah High School. I’ve been involved in education from middle school through college l

evel as a teacher, a volunteer, a parapro, and a coach. In my current job at YVC, I’ve had the pleasure of teaching several generations of Selah Running Start students how to write a college essay, and, hopefully, how to love learning. Recently, I co-chaired the successful Selah bond and levy campaigns with my wife, Amy. We love our school district, our neighborhood, and our town. Ultimately, I want to give something back to the place I am from. I think the best way to do that is through the schools. Education

· Problem-based/Project-based curriculum that emphasizes
o Creativity
o Complex Problem Solving
o Communication and Collaboration
· Technical Education—in particular work done with our hands.

Selah High School medical sciences teacher, Heather Gamache, has probably been doing the Texas Two-Step. That's because Gamache is being honored at the Association for Career and Technical Education Vision Conference this week in San Antonio, Texas. Gamache is being recognized as the 2024 Health Science Education Outstanding New Teacher Award recipient. Recipients of the award have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique, and novel educational programs which serve to improve and promote CTE in schools in one of the health fields. Gamache is in her fifth year of teaching at Selah High School.

Congratulations Heather Gamache! We are proud of you!

The Selah School District will have an additional opportunity to view the instructional materials that were suggested during the Since Time Immemorial (STI) materials review on Friday, June 14th from 8:00am-12:00pm at the district office. State law (RCW 28A.320.170) requires "...when a school district board of directors reviews or adopts its social studies curriculum, it shall incorporate curricula about the history, culture and government of the nearest federally recognized Indian tribe or tribes, so that students learn about the unique heritage and experiences of their closest neighbors." In addition, each district shall collaborate with neighboring tribes, which for Selah School District is the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation. In November of this school year, a committee of teachers from each grade level convened at a gathering with the Yakama Nation, ESD and other districts within our region to learn more about STI. In addition, the team met monthly to review our current offerings and determine what and where STI would most benefit our students.

If you reviewed the materials during the May 7th viewing, this is a repeat showing of materials. Any questions, please reach out to Alicia Jacob at [email protected]

Since Time Immemorial Curriculum Review:

The Selah School District is excited to share with our staff, families and community members an opportunity to view the instructional materials that were suggested during the Since Time Immemorial curriculum review. Since 2015, state law (RCW 28A.320.170) requires each district "...shall incorporate curricula about the history, culture and government of the nearest federally recognized Indian tribe or tribes, so that students learn about the unique heritage and experiences of their closest neighbors." In addition, each district shall collaborate with neighboring tribes, which for Selah School District is the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation.

A committee of staff from all sites attended opportunities to learn more about STI and the Yakama Nation to recommend resources to complement or enhance our current instructional offerings for the 2024-25 school year. Depending upon the grade level, resources may be lessons, instructional units, books, videos, field trips or classroom guests.

Viewing will be available on Tuesday, May 7th from 7am to 5:30pm in the PD Room at the District Office. If you have any questions, please reach out to Alicia Jacob.

I first want to say my heart goes out to these educators in our neighboring district and especially to the families of those who were "RIF"'d today. I was riffed in the YSD in the 90's and it turns your world upside down. I'm praying for those teachers and for those students impacted by the cuts.

Second, I want to reassure Selah residents that the Selah School District's budget is in good health and good hands. Our district has been on top of these budget issues. We do have a shortfall next year, but it's manageable. We have made cuts this year and next that are intended to have the least impact on students in the classroom, much of this through attrition and belt-tightening here and there. We have built up a healthy reserve for seasons such as this. Thankfully, and most importantly, our enrollment has fully recovered from the pandemic. This is due to Selah's trust in our schools. Our families should know that we have been careful stewards of that trust and that our bottom line is sound.

More than 100 Yakima School District staff members could lose their jobs in the wake of student enrollment declines and budget shortfalls.
