Last week brought the close to the 2026 Selah Fire Department recruit academy. 10 new members attended approximately 250 hours of training including classroom learning, online curriculum, and many Saturdays full of hands on training.

This group of recruits comes from all walks of life and it has been a pleasure watching them go from complete strangers, to a close knit team, supporting each other at every turn through academy. They've worked diligently at their skillsets and are ready to hit the ground running.

The Selah Fire Department wants to thank the recruits' families for all the time sacrificed with loved ones for academy hours, the instructors who dedicated their time to help with training during long Saturdays, and the recruits themselves who invested themselves in the program and made this years academy something great.

Last but not least, THANK YOU! to our mutual aid and community partners for your grace and generosity in lending your time and resources to us to enable quality training:

West Valley Fire-Rescue for use of their live fire facility.

Yakima Training Center for use of their car fire prop.

Elite Towing and Recovery for being willing to bring us cars on short notice for extrication training.

If anyone out there is curious about what we do and possibly joining us, come see us at 206 W. Fremont Ave. for a station tour and an application.

So it begins. Yesterday Your Selah Fire Department was dispatched to a fire on Sage Trail Rd in East Selah. With the help of our mutual aid partners, Gleed Fire Department, Naches Fire Department, Federal Firefighters of Yakima IAFF Local F-295, Washington State Department of Natural Resources we were able to stop the fire without any loss of structure and no injury to firefighters or home/property owners. Thank you to all involved.

Also just a reminder that when we have a fire, it is not a good time to go take a drive in that area. We know people are curious, but when people drive close to fire scenes it can impede firefighting operations and put everyone at risk of injury.

Yakima Training Center will be involved in a prescribed burn today 5/21/2026.

“May the Fourth be with you.”

A phrase recognised around the world—
and a date that carries even deeper meaning.

On May 4, we honour real heroes.

Firefighters who step forward when others step back.
Who face the unknown with courage, commitment, and strength.
Who stand between danger and the community.

Today, across the world, we say:
May the Fourth be with you—
and with all who serve.

The past few weeks have been extra busy. On top of our normal calls and duties, we were privileged enough to host almost 250 second grade students from John Campbell Elementary in EDITH (Exit Drills In The Home) house, and fire education.
Then 350 pre-k and kindergarten students from Robert Lince Early Learning Center joined for some fire education. These classes includes what to do if your house catches on fire, the importance of working smoke detectors, having a plan with those you live with on where to meet, and calling 911. We also had almost 250 parents volunteer to help the teachers with these field trips. All of the students got to try on some firefighting gear and sprayed some water from a fire hose. Between the students from the schools, the homeschool groups, and the parent volunteers we hosted almost 850 people the past few weeks.
On top of this Selah Intermediate School held their annual career day which we normally attend. Unfortunately, due to our busy schedule with classes we were unable to make it work this year. a huge thank you to Federal Firefighters of Yakima IAFF Local F-295 of Yakima Training Center Fire Department for stepping in to fill our shoes in this event.
We also want to extend our gratitude to Suncomm 911 Communications Yakima for sending dispatchers out to help with teaching classes, Selah School District for allowing these invaluable field trips, and last but certainly not least all of the parents that trust us to help in the education process of their children, it really does take a village.
