β›ˆοΈThere is a Slight Risk (level 2 out of 5) for severe storms across portions of northeast SD and west central MN and a Marginal Risk spreading up to a line from Eureka to Murdo, SD Monday evening into Tuesday morning. The main hazards will be wind gusts of 60-70 mph and 1 inch diameter hail.

Increasing southerly winds gusting from 25 to 40 mph today will usher in hotter temperatures, especially over central SD where readings will rise into the upper 90s to low 100s. A Heat Advisory is in effect today for areas west of the Missouri River, where temperatures and heat indices will rise to 100-105 degrees. High to Very High fire danger will also be in place over central SD due to the strong south winds and humidity ranging from 20 to 30 percent.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of South Dakota including Corson, Dewey, Stanley, Sully, and Hughes counties until 9 PM MDT. This includes the cities of Mobridge and Pierre.

Still expecting some potentially severe storms across north central SD tonight after 7 PM CDT. There is a Marginal Risk (level 1 out of 5) for severe storms mainly in western Dewey and Corson counties. The main hazard is wind gusts of 60-70 mph with some hail up to an inch in diameter possible as well mainly in western Corson county. Make sure to stay weather alert tonight if you are in this area.

* WHAT...Heat index values up to 103 expected.

* WHERE...Portions of central and north central South Dakota.

* WHEN...Until 8 PM CDT /7 PM MDT/ this evening.

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat
illnesses.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose
fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning
or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and
heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! Call 9 1 1.
