Crops, including barley, oats, millet, wheat, corn, and canola, are subject to drought stress and can accumulate toxic levels of nitrates, posing a risk to cattle.

In light of the current drought, it is crucial to test fields prior to grazing and feeding, as some areas have already reported nitrate levels 3-4 times the toxic threshold for cattle.

It is recommended that you contact your local extension offices for assistance with submitting samples.

🌾Over the years, our needs throughout the county have changed. We are looking for your help to identify some of the main concerns we are seeing now. Whether this be soil erosion, tree belts, livestock water, we want to hear what you have to say.

This voluntary survey is intended to help USDA-NRCS identify local resource concerns. This information could help delineate funds to better assist our producers.

The deadline to apply for the Century Farm & Ranch Recognition program is August 1, 2026.

South Dakota Farm Bureau and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources partner to recognize generational family farms and ranches each year at the South Dakota State Fair. The program recognizes farms and ranches that have reached 100, 125, and 150-year milestones. To qualify for the program, the applicant(s) must have retained continuous ownership of at least 80 acres of the original farmland for 100 years or more. Application forms are available at https://www.sdfbf.org/Get-Involved/Century-Farms or by calling the SDFB at (605) 353-8050.

Recognized families will be celebrated Thursday, September 3, at 10 a.m. on the South Dakota Farm Bureau Dakotaland Stage at the State Fair in Huron.
