Selden Responds to Residential Structure Fire on College Road

On Thursday, May 28, at approximately 10:55 p.m., the Selden Fire Department was activated for a Signal 13 (Structure Fire) at 69 College Road. Initial reports indicated that one occupant was trapped inside the residence.

Selden Chief 32 (5-25-32) arrived on scene and transmitted a 13/35 (Structure Fire/Working Fire). Chief 32's initial size-up reported heavy fire throughout a two-story residence. Shortly thereafter, Selden Chief 30 (5-25-30) arrived and assumed command.

Engine 6 (5-25-6) was the first apparatus to arrive, reaching the scene at approximately 10:59 p.m. A handline was immediately stretched and placed into operation. Engine 11 (5-25-11) arrived shortly after and established a water supply from a hydrant down the roadway. A total of three handlines were stretched from Engine 6, with an additional handline deployed from Engine 11.

As operations progressed, it was determined that interior access within the structure had become compromised. Command initiated a transition to aerial operations utilizing Truck 2 (5-25-2). The main body of fire was brought under control through master stream operations. Once conditions improved, interior operations were reassessed and resumed using the four handlines previously deployed.

During the incident, the reporting party was located outside the residence and confirmed that all occupants had safely exited the structure.

The fire was placed under control approximately 50 minutes after units arrived on scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal's Office and the Suffolk County Arson Squad.

🚑💙 Suffolk County proudly recognized the dedication and lifesaving efforts of our EMS professionals during the Suffolk County Legislature’s annual EMS Appreciation Week ceremony held yesterday.

The recipient of the 4th Legislative District was Captain Nicholas Mangogna of the Selden Fd. Nick has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to service, leadership, and clinical excellence through his work with the Selden Fire Department. He began his journey in July 2010 as a member of the Junior Company, where he quickly distinguished himself through dedication and leadership, rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. After transitioning to full membership in 2014 and completing probation in 2015 earning Probie of the Year, he became an active firefighter with Truck Company 1. Nicholas expanded his role in emergency services by earning his EMT certification in 2015, later advancing to EMT-CC in 2017 and serving as an ALS provider. In January 2023, he achieved Paramedic certification and continued to elevate his clinical expertise, becoming a cleared Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI) Paramedic in 2025, at which time he was the department's only volunteer at that level. His leadership includes serving as Lieutenant (2023-2024) and Captain (2025-2026), reflecting his commitment to mentoring others. An Eagle Scout, Nicholas also designed and completed a memorial honoring Chief Amold Seaman. His honors include multiple Chief's Awards and EMS Provider of the Year, alongside numerous lifesaving contributions.

The Chiefs, Officers, and Members of the Selden Fire Department, congratulate Nick on a job well done!
