Union-Snyder Community Action Agency

Union-Snyder Community Action Agency Union-Snyder CAA is a member of a nationwide network of Community Action Agencies

Union-Snyder CAA is dedicated to improving our community by helping individuals and families living in low income reach self-sufficiency. We accomplish this by providing services in five components:

- Community Services: Services available to low income families and individuals through Community Services include Housing Assistance, Energy Assistance, Transportation Assistance, Food Referrals, and

more.

- Veterans Affairs: Union-Snyder CAA is the home of the Snyder County Veterans Affairs Office, which assists veterans, widows, and dependent children in obtaining benefits that are available from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

- CORE Susquehanna AmeriCorps: Union-Snyder CAA administers the local branch of the national AmeriCorps service program. Members commit to a term of service at a local nonprofit organization in exchange for benefits like education support.

- Community Outreach: Union-Snyder CAA works in partnership with local organizations and communities to alleviate the causes and impacts of poverty in Union and Snyder Counties through programs like Strengths-Based Family Worker Credentials & Leadership Certificate, Poverty Simulations, The Linen Closet (TLC) Donation Collection, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), and an annual Family Service Conference each spring.

CAA is thrilled to announce our new Executive Director, Jill Walter!

Jill brings more than 19 years of experience leading and strengthening programs that help individuals and families overcome barriers, achieve greater self-sufficiency, and build lasting stability. Throughout her career in Pennsylvania's Workforce Development and Community Action sectors, she has been committed to creating opportunities that truly empower people.

With decades of leadership and management experience, Jill understands the importance of meeting people where they are while developing innovative and creative solutions to community needs. Her passion for helping Central PA communities thrive is evident (and contagious!), and her vision aligns deeply with CAA's mission of reducing poverty through collaboration, opportunity, and empowerment.

As our communities continue to face evolving challenges, we are excited for the leadership, experience, and energy Jill brings to this new role and to the work we do each day at CAA.

Please join us in welcoming Jill to the Union-Snyder CAA family! 🎉

We’re so grateful to and for supporting CAA food programs with their donation drive last week! At their Friday night screening of the movie Soul, attendees were encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation to support our emergency pantry at CAA. We can’t thank our community partners enough for showing up when it matters most. Thank you to all who made this happen!

We’re so proud of our program which was awarded the PennSERVE AmeriCorps Partnership Excellence Award for outstanding partnership development during the 2025-26 program year, working to expand service to meet previously unmet community needs 🤍 Our program now touches 10 counties across central PA and is filling the gaps in our rural communities. Congratulations, CORE!

Happy Memorial Day from CAA and Snyder County VA! We've been distributing flags to local cemeteries to decorate and honor the legacy of county soldiers for Memorial Day. Our offices are closed on Monday, 5/25, in observance, but we want to take a moment to share a bit of history about the origin of the holiday.

Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established “Decoration Day” as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed each year on May 30, and it’s believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom across the country.

The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery.

We'll be open for usual business hours on Tuesday, 5/26 from 9:30-4. Have a wonderful and safe holiday!
