“Deputies Make Another Big Arrest”
*Stolen Property Recovered*
Scott County- Earlier today Chief Deputy Toby Deaton, Deputy Kyle West, and Scottsburg City Officer Greg Green went to an address on Second Street in Scottsburg to do a follow-up investigation. Deputies had recovered some stolen property at the residence earlier in the week and were able to receive enough information to locate other items that turned out to be stolen and other items possibly stolen at this same location and at another nearby location. Tools, Culverts and other work-related equipment totaling in the thousands of dollars were recovered.
It appears some of the items recovered were from two burglaries in Scott County, however, there are several other items that are not from these cases. If anyone is missing work related equipment or if anyone has purchased any item from the arrested, (photo below), contact Chief Deputy Toby Deaton at the Sheriff’s Office, 812-752-8400.
John Cooper, 37, from Scottsburg, IN, was arrested near the scene for Felony Burglary and was incarcerated at the Scott County Jail.

Sheriff Goodin stated, “I’m extremely proud, this is what happens when you do thorough investigations”. “Your deputies continued an earlier investigation, and this is the result, excellent police work”. “The arrested person allegedly just recently moved to Scott County”. “He picked the wrong county to move, to be breaking the law”.

This investigation is continuing.

During the stop K-9 Charley was deployed and made a positive indication of narcotics in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was completed and during the search approximately 1.5 ounces of alleged methamphetamine was located.
The driver, Riley Nasby, 28, from Deputy, IN, (photo below), was arrested and charged with: POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE - AT LEAST 28 GRAMS; DEALING IN METHAMPHETAMINE -AT LEAST TEN GRAMS; POSSESSION OF SCHEDULE I, II, III, OR IV CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE;
MAINTAINING A COMMON NUISANCE.
Sheriff Goodin stated, “repeatedly our deputies keep arresting drug dealers. This is why we are considered one of the safest counties and our crime rates continue to be lowest around. As I have continued to say, if you come to Scott County to break the law, you will go to jail! Another outstanding job by your deputies.”

Homeowners Discover Missing Cash and Jewelry…Persistent Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy Diligently Works the Case, Resulting in an Arrest, Recovery of Cash and Jewelry, while Identifying other Victims.
Scott County- On 5-2-2025, Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy Kyle West responded to a home in Scott County where the residents were reporting the theft of cash and miscellaneous jewelry. Upon arrival, Deputy West spoke to the homeowners, who advised that they had hired a cleaning company in April to clean their residence and subsequently discovered missing cash and jewelry from their home. After interviewing the homeowners, Deputy West immediately initiated an investigation, resulting in him locating several items that came from the victim’s home. Deputy West applied for a search warrant, which was granted and subsequently executed at the residence of Rachelle R. Smith of Scottsburg, where numerous other alleged stolen jewelry items and illegal drugs were located. Smith was placed under arrest by Deputy West, who transported her to the Scott County Jail without incident. Smith was arrested for Theft, Possession of Methamphetamine, Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Possession of Ma*****na, and Possession of Paraphernalia. Currently, Deputy West has been able to connect Smith to other thefts in southern Indiana, where she allegedly stole property from homes she was hired to clean. Sheriff Goodin advised the following… “Police work is exactly that, work…Deputy West continues to work this case, and he will until he is satisfied there is nothing more to know. I couldn’t be prouder of my deputies, who go above and beyond every day serving our county”.
This is an ongoing investigation, and additional charges may be forthcoming. If you have information concerning this investigation, please contact the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 812-752-8400. You can remain anonymous.
