BLOOD DRIVES SAVES LIVES !!!!!!!!!!!!

One of which is Firefighter Matt Higgs. In Matt’s young life he has been a Volunteer Firefighter, College Athlete, Corrections Officer and Father to 4 children: Gracelynn 8, Abram 5, Eleanor 2, and Stella 4 months. In December of 2019 Matt had a cardiac procedure and developed some complications that required an extended hospital stay and several units of blood to save his life. During this time Stella was born, Covid 19 changed everybody's life. I fear that if the timing of Matt's need for infusions would have been just a little later when everything was locked down then his survival would have been out of the question. Blood supplies reached critical levels during the early stages of the lock down, many medical procedures were postponed during this time and this seemed to ease some of the need but as the restrictions began being lifted due to a better understanding of precautionary measures additional procedures are being done, additional people are traveling and participating in activities that unfortunately require blood infusions on occasion, the difference that an adequate blood supply makes in critical care incidents cannot be overstated. In this young man's case it truly was the difference between life and death.

It was amazing to see the outpouring of people that gave blood when the first drives began after the precautionary measures were better understood, however need knows no season and and we would truly like to do our part in assuring that this vital resource will be available for someone else's Matt. Because for the people whose lives Matt has touched donors were indeed the difference between life and death and we are eternally grateful.

Sellersburg Fire Department will be hosting a Blood Drive on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at St. John Paul Catholic Church located at 2605 West Saint Joe Road, Sellersburg, IN 47172. Schedule your appointment today!

Thank you to everyone who has helped in one way or another. You are making a difference

During this difficult time I am once again reminded why the Sellersburg Fire Department still exists to help this community, as some of you may know we lost our funding from the district that was set up to provide for fire protection in the area for some reasons that seem dubious to me but such is the world that we live in when governmental entities get involved that apparently have personal agendas that they use to override public needs. Enough about that.

This post is to give credit to the people in this community who have dug deep and supported our latest efforts to assist people in need. The Sellersburg Fire Department has been delivering supplies to people affected by the current events in an attempt to address some of their immediate needs. While we have not been able to solve issues for everybody that has reached out, the donations and support from people and organizations like, a local painting company, Tony, Sue, Charlotte, Jessica, Brian, Lynn, Tiffany, Covered Bridge HOA, Bill, Karen, Starlight Distillery, an anonymous gentleman in a local grocery store, and an anonymous lady who said to pay it forward, and others that we appreciate but I may have missed, some of whom have asked to remain anonymous, have helped quite a few people. The Sellersburg Fire Department is proud of its long tradition of finding ways to address the community needs whenever and however they arise, sometimes with opposition but we are naive enough to believe right is right, and truly appreciate the people in this community that step up and assist each other when times are tough and do not merely wait for government assistance. I personally have a serious distaste for the portions of government that places its wants and desires above the needs and safety of the people, but I am very proud when I see people step up to assist each other. I really appreciate the assistance that is truly helping us help others.

I believe that I speak for all of the members of the Sellersburg Fire Department when I say that it is an honor to serve this community with the people that consistently show their compassion for others.

I truly believe that the decision that was made by the Fire District Board has lessened the services that you all receive and deserve but that decision was made by others that I do not feel understand the complexity of providing Public Safety Services. This current situation has greatly opened my eyes as to where people's priorities lie and I am truly of the opinion that the priorities of the Sellersburg Volunteer Fire Department focus more on community needs than does our replacement.
