🚨 SELMA POLICE TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO 12½-YEAR FEDERAL PRISON SENTENCE
What began as a routine traffic stop in Selma ultimately uncovered more than four pounds of methamphetamine and led to a 12½-year federal prison sentence for a man involved in a drug trafficking operation along the East Coast.
On January 14, 2025, a Selma Police detective stopped a Kia Optima for following a tractor-trailer too closely. During the traffic stop, the detective’s observations and questioning raised additional concerns, ultimately leading detectives to search the vehicle. Inside, detectives discovered more than four pounds of methamphetamine.
The investigation determined that James Nadel Taylor, 31, of Delaware, and another individual had traveled from Delaware to South Carolina to obtain the methamphetamine and were returning to Delaware when they were stopped in Selma.
Taylor later pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.
This week, Taylor was sentenced to 12½ years in federal prison. Chief Justin R. Vause praised the Selma detective’s professionalism, awareness, and attention to detail:
“This sentence reflects the outstanding work and dedication of our detectives, whose attention to detail during a routine traffic stop led to the seizure of a significant quantity of methamphetamine and ultimately the dismantling of a drug trafficking operation.”
Chief Vause added:
“This outcome sends a clear message to those who seek to traffic illegal drugs through our town and across North Carolina: law enforcement agencies are committed to identifying, investigating, and holding offenders accountable.”
U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle also recognized the Selma detective’s work, specifically praising the officer’s ability to recognize indicators of criminal activity during what began as a routine traffic stop.
U.S. Attorney Boyle stated:
“Here is another fine example of law enforcement protecting and serving the citizens of Eastern North Carolina. Through one officer’s keen eye for discerning criminal activity, law enforcement sniffed out the drug mule and his Big Shark Bad Boy co-conspirator.” said U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle. “To those who think they can bring their venomous drugs into Eastern North Carolina: you are dead wrong! We will find you; we will prosecute you; and we will throw you under the jail.”
