LEGOS AND RADIOS IMPROVE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS
For ages 4+ and firefighters

Tonight we had small Lego toy sets spilled out on a table. The builders did not have any pictures or instructions of what the finished Lego set is supposed to look like. In the meeting room we had firefighters be the model-makers on a talk-a-round channel. In another room, we had 4 firefighters instructing 2 builders a piece telling the model-makers how to construct the sets.

Without telling the crew what the finished product is supposed to look like, the model boss tries to tell the model-makers over the radio what piece goes with what other piece. The model boss will quickly realize how their seemingly obviously clear instructions can be taken in more than one way.

“As long as there is something to burn or break, Seminole Fire is all in.”

Today members of the Seminole Fire Department trained in roof ventilation and VEIS. Tactics necessary when conducting search and rescue along with interior fire suppression.

- Roof ventilation, or vertical ventilation, is a critical firefighting tactic involving cutting holes in a roof to release heat, smoke, and toxic gases. This convection-driven process improves visibility and reduces flashover risks, allowing for safer interior search and rescue. It requires coordinated teams to sound for structural integrity and safely cut openings, often using saws.

- Vent-Enter-Isolate-Search (VEIS) is a high-risk, high-reward firefighting tactic designed for rapid rescue of potential victims in bedrooms or high-survivability areas. Firefighters enter from the exterior via window, immediately close the door to separate the room from the fire, and search, often used when traditional entries are blocked.

A fog machine, an abandoned house, and a few firefighters. What else do you need?

Tonight we trained on wall-breaching training. This involves using tools to breach gypsum board or drywall, often in stud bays, to create emergency egress paths. Key techniques involve using tools like hooks or axes to clear studs, managing SCBA gear through the opening, and potentially using low-profile maneuvers for tight spaces.

FYI it’s hard to get action shots when you have little to no visibility.
