As we approach Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor our military men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, we also want to remind veterans and their families that Tate County offers services to help apply for disability compensation and other benefits. In 2022, the PACT Act was passed which streamlines the process of applying for veterans of the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War. If a veteran had "boots on the ground" in Vietnam from 1962 -1975, if a veteran had duty or visitation on a US Navy or Coast guard ship in the inland waterways of Vietnam during these same dates, or if a veteran had duty in or near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), between 1967 and 1971, there is a list of conditions that are called "presumptives." If these conditions were diagnosed during service OR at any time after separation, it is presumed that these conditions were caused by serving in these areas. Just a few of these conditions are bladder cancer, leukemia, prostate cancer, diabetes, and Parkinson's Disease.
For veterans who served in Gulf War locations on or after August 2, 1990, to include Afghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Neutral zone between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the waters of the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf, and Red Sea, there is a list of "presumptives." These include chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular symptoms, salmonella, malaria, West Nile virus, and others.
Veterans or their spouses can visit the Veteran Services Office (VS0) on Mondays (except for holidays) and Tuesdays, 8:00 to Noon and 1:00 to 5:00. The new location for the VSO Office is behind the Tate County Courthouse at 205 French's Alley. Please call 662-501-3050 and schedule an appointment. Or you may email [email protected].
