Thank you Cafe 19 for sponsoring a raised bed for the 2026 season! We are so appreciative of your support in our mission to bring more fresh produce to those in need 🫶

We are so excited to have already started growing in most of our beds and have all beds ‘sold’ for this season!

We are always looking for volunteers to help in the garden so please reach out if you’re interested to [email protected] or stop by during any of our scheduled garden times:

Tuesdays 9-10am
Thursdays 7-8pm

Community garden volunteers care for and distribute harvest from sponsored beds to food pantries and senior housing facilities within Seneca County throughout the season 🍓

We will be starting to plant raised beds tomorrow, Tuesday May 26th from 9-11am for anyone that would like to join !

Many gardeners grab whichever trellis is on sale, then wonder why their cucumbers collapse by mid-summer.

The truth is that **every climbing vegetable needs a specific type of support**. Using the wrong structure can lead to broken stems, poor airflow, and fruit rotting on the soil.

**Flat string trellises** work best for tomatoes because they provide a vertical surface that helps support heavy branches and keeps growth evenly spaced.

**A-frame trellises** are ideal for cucumbers. This design allows the fruit to hang freely underneath, helping it grow straight and clean instead of curling on the ground.

**Wire arches** are perfect for beans and peas. Their tendrils easily wrap around thin wire, which they grip much better than thick wooden supports.

**Heavy crops like squash or melons** need reinforced arches along with fabric slings placed under each fruit. Without this support, the weight of the fruit can tear the vine down in the middle of the season.

🌱 **A key setup rule to protect your plants:**

* Install the trellis **before transplanting**, not after. Driving stakes near established roots can damage the plant.
* Set up the structure first, then plant about **six inches away from the base**.
* Place trellises on the **north side of the bed** so tall plants won’t shade shorter crops growing to the south.

Using the **right trellis for each crop** makes vertical gardening far more successful and reliable.
