Today, we honor the life and legacy of Gloria Steinem—journalist, author, organizer and one of the most influential voices of the modern women’s rights movement.

For more than five decades, Steinem worked to advance equality and expand women’s voices in journalism, politics and public life. She co-founded Ms. magazine, the National Women’s Political Caucus and the Women’s Media Center, helping generations of women recognize their collective power and claim their place in shaping our nation.

The movement for equality did not begin—or end—with any one person. From the reformers who gathered in Seneca Falls in 1848 to the activists who carried that work into the 20th and 21st centuries, each generation has built upon the courage of those who came before.

Gloria Steinem carried that legacy forward. Now, it is ours to continue.

Equality is more than a word—it is a promise, a conversation, and a journey that continues today.

Join the Women’s Rights National Historical Park for Equality Weekend, August 21–23, as we reflect on the enduring legacy of the 1848 Women’s Rights Convention and explore what equality means in our communities today.

Throughout the weekend, enjoy free ranger programs, living history presentations, family-friendly activities, make-and-take crafts, special performances by the Terra String Quartet, and open hours at the M’Clintock House. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to a place that has shaped history, there’s something for everyone to experience.

All programs are free and open to the public. We hope to see you in Seneca Falls as we honor those who came before us and continue the conversation about justice, opportunity, and equal rights for all.

On this day in 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, along with Lucretia Mott, Mary Ann M’Clintock, Martha Coffin Wright, Jane Hunt, and other reformers, opened the first Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York.

Over two historic days, nearly 300 people gathered at the Wesleyan Chapel to discuss women’s rights and adopt the groundbreaking Declaration of Sentiments, a document that boldly called for equality and helped ignite the women’s rights movement in the United States.

Today, we honor their courage and the lasting impact of their vision. As Friends of Women’s Rights National Historical Park, we’re proud to help preserve the place where history was made and to ensure these stories continue to inspire future generations.

✨ History happened here. The movement continues with all of us.

🌻 What a wonderful first day at Convention Days!

We were thrilled to welcome so many visitors to the Friends of Women’s Rights National Historical Park table today. From longtime supporters to first-time visitors, it was inspiring to connect with people of all ages who came to learn more about the history of the women’s rights movement and the work being done to preserve it.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, snap a photo, ask questions, and share in the excitement of this incredible weekend.

📍 There’s still time to join us! We’ll be back Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM–5:00 PM alongside many other outstanding organizations for a weekend filled with engaging speakers, educational programs, living history, exhibits, family activities, and meaningful conversations.

Calling all young readers and their families for a special literary addition to Convention Days 2026! 📖

Women’s Rights NHP is pleased to announce a picture book reading by the author, Elizabeth Vollstadt, of What Charlotte Found at Seneca Falls: A Story of the First Woman Rights Convention. This family-friendly program will take place on Sunday, July 18 from 3pm – 3:30pm in the Guntzel Theater, which is located on the first floor of the Visitor Center.

About the book: “Imagine being a young woman in 1848, frustrated by the limitations placed on your life because you were a woman. How thrilling it would be to read that a woman's rights convention was being planned at a village near your home! Charlotte Woodward, living in a small town in upstate New York, felt that thrill…With a heart ‘beating in rebellion,’ she attended the Seneca Falls Woman's Rights Convention. She didn't think it would change her life, but it did. Find out how in this story.”

Immediately following the reading, from 3:30pm – 4pm, join Ms. Vollstadt and America’s National Park Store for a book signing of What Charlotte Found at Seneca Falls.

Make it a whole day of family fun at Convention Days 2026! From hands-on crafts & coloring in the Visitor Center, to exciting outdoor games in Declaration Park, and more engaging activities for kids of all ages, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. 🖍️✂️

At the Junior Ranger Ceremony & Family Program on Saturday, July 18, join two historical friends: Elizabeth Cady Stanton (portrayed by Melinda Grube, PhD) and Fredrick Douglass (portrayed by Nathan Richardson) to learn about the Women's Rights Convention they are planning.

At select times throughout the weekend, play old-fashioned lawn games and guess what’s in “Grandma’s Trunk” with the Seneca Falls Historical Society. Then, stop by the Visitor Center to learn about the five women organizers of the 1848 Convention by coloring special Convention Days coloring sheets; and make-and-take your own “seeds of change” and “carry it forward” banners with park rangers and volunteers.
