WORLD’S OLDEST LOONS RETURN TO SENEY

On Saturday morning, April 25, a female loon on I Pool beheld a relatively frequent spring sight: two males battling, with beating wings and stabbings bills, for control of the breeding territory. The observer was Fe, who was first color-marked as an E Pool mother in 1990, and who will thus turn at least 40 this summer. The hostilities were brutal but brief, and after only a minute one of the combatants discerned that this was not his day, after which he shortly took flight for less perilous waters. With the challenger vanquished, Fe and the unbanded victor, who was likely but not certainly her mate from 2025, initiated a circling round of bill dipping and jerk diving, aspects of courtship involved in forming, or re-forming, a pair bond for the season.

Concurrently on nearby H Pool, Fe’s former partner of 25 years, ABJ, was engaged in scouting for potential nest sites with his current companion, Aye-Aye, with whom he bred unsuccessfully on H last year. Although ABJ, who will turn 39 this June, hatched a record 32 chicks with Fe, since their split in April 2022 he has failed to produce further offspring, and she remains the only mate with whom he has ever sired young. Along with the broader Seney loon population, which includes color-marked adults who are embarking upon their 24th, 27th and 33rd Refuge seasons, ABJ and Fe and their respective partners will spend the next few weeks engaged in territorial defense, habitat assessment, copulation and nest building ahead of 27-29 days of egg incubation that, with luck, will culminate in the emergence of one or two downy fluffballs in early-mid June.

Thanks to Dani Fegan for her extensive documentation of the migratory return of Seney loons.

COMMON LOONS BELATEDLY RETURN TO SENEY

Due to this spring’s late thaw, many Refuge loons, having migrated north from oceanic wintering grounds at the beginning of April, have spent the past two weeks idling on Lake Michigan while making daily flights to Seney in overhead search for safe landing zones; it was only this Monday that tongues of open water on several pools began swelling to loon-accommodating dimensions. Among those who dropped into these areas were the D Pool female, Vert, who was first color-marked as a successful mother on adjacent G in 2011, and Sekhen, who was hatched on T2 West in 2009, and who has spent most of his adult Refuge tenure as an unpaired “floater” without a breeding home. Because the recent territories of the world’s oldest documented Common Loons, ABJ and Fe, remained largely frozen this week, it is not particularly concerning that neither has yet to be spotted as a returnee; with ice now in rapid retreat, their H and I Pool domains should be navigable within a day or two.

Thanks to Jen Wycoff and Dani Fegan for their observations.

Friends of Seney to Host 2026 Winter Film Festival

Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge will present the 2026 Winter Film Festival on three Thursday evenings in March, offering engaging films and presentations that explore wildlife, science, and conservation across the Great Lakes region.

All programs will be held at the Erickson Center for the Arts’ Pine Performance Center in Curtis, Michigan.

This year’s festival theme, Science, Stories & Wildlife of the Great Lakes, highlights the research, people, and partnerships working to better understand and protect these remarkable ecosystems.

Festival Schedule:

Thursday, March 5 – Owls of Whitefish Point (Live Presentation) Wildlife photographers and field biologists Chris Neri and Nova Mackentley share nearly two decades of owl banding experience at Whitefish Point. Through stories, images, and research insights, the presentation explores snowy owl migration and the value of long-term monitoring in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This program is presented in partnership with Friends of Whitefish Point.

Thursday, March 12 – All Too Clear (Film) This visually stunning documentary takes viewers beneath the surface of the Great Lakes using advanced underwater drone technology. The film examines how invasive quagga mussels are reshaping freshwater ecosystems and how scientists are responding to rapid change. Following the screening, Elliot Nelson of Michigan Sea Grant and Michigan State Extension will be available for questions.

Thursday, March 19 – Return of the Trumpeters (Film) The festival concludes with this powerful documentary chronicling the recovery of trumpeter swans from near extinction. Produced by Steve Devon for the Trumpeter Swan Society, the film features spectacular footage of Seney’s swans and highlights the collaboration and conservation strategies that helped restore this iconic species. A Seney National Wildlife Refuge ranger will be available for post-film discussion.
