The Granary in Sequim

The Granary in Sequim The Sequim Granary building has been a cornerstone landmark in Sequim for a century as of 2023!

Recognize this upstanding citizen? He appears to have incorreclty assumed we were done with our pallet of concrete and thought 1:30am on Monday (4th) morning would be a good time to help us dispose of it. Once again, any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Last week, we announced that Verizon had installed new equipment on the top of the elevator tower and will soon be removing all the old equipment. This week, we are thrilled to share that their equipment room inside has been completely removed, and we now have the entire space back that will be part of our coffee shop! We have included a few progression photos from when we purchased the property (the white wall on the left), to the partial demo phase (the room and walls beyond the two columns) and a few since. While we clearly have some work left to prepare this area, this is officially the final demolition job of the project! We will be sharing more interior update sneak peeks in the coming weeks, but I will share we do have paint going on some walls! We are eagerly looking forward to opening our doors and sharing this space with you all!

Sequim, you’re in for a treat! Mr. Paul Sanders has transformed his poem, “Sequim’s Old Grain Tower,” which he shared last year, into an epic song! We’re incredibly honored to have been entrusted with such an iconic piece of our town’s history and to have the privilege of passing along some of the stories, history, and creativity that you all have generously shared. Enjoy and thank you Paul!

We had a nice chat with a longtime local the other day, and he happened to recount some old Sequim memories, one of which was the old cattle bridge at the west end of Sequim heading down the hill past the Wal-Mart roundabout. It just so happens that we had recently done a bit of digging at the National Archives facility in Seattle and ironically ran across the picture above! You will notice the aforementioned cattle crossing (the pilings of which are still visible on the south side of the road, next picture) with the Dungeness River tree line visible in the background. The picture of the cattle crossing was from 1931, just a few years before the new Highway 101 Dungeness River Bridge was built in 1934, all visible on the included imagery from the Granary to the River. Enjoy!

Many of you have noticed the rather noticeable crane hanging around the Granary these past few weeks and wondered what we’re up to. Fortunately, the crane and its associated expenses are not ours. Instead, we will be the beneficiaries of their work! After years of discussions and negotiations, we are finally witnessing the fruition of our efforts to minimize the impact of the Verizon communications equipment that has been present both inside and outside the granary for decades. The first photograph depicts the new antenna, circled in green, which will replace everything inside the red box. Each side of the granary will soon have only one antenna, instead of three, along with a substantial mounting bracket. This upgrade was made possible by significant technological advancements and Verizon’s commitment to investing in miniaturizing our site. Additionally, a 15’x20’ inside server/equipment room has been reduced to a 3’x3’ outdoor equipment cabinet. We are grateful for their willingness to engage with us and diligently work to find opportunities to reduce the impact on our community skyscraper!

Many of you have been wondering, what is taking so long! It took some doing, but thanks to Brian Keyte, we now have photo evidence of at least one of the many challenges we have faced along the way! That said, we are excited to announce that sometime in calendar year 2026, we will open at least some of our doors to the public (hopefully with some prayers, all of them)! And with that delightfully ambiguous statement, we wish you all a Happy January 15th! Shout out to for his fun and playful art form. Thank you for including us in your creative endeavors!

One more very rare photo of the south side of the granary, this one during the Dungeness Agriculture Supply era and just prior to its 1981 remodel into the Landmark Mall. The original 1930s "Peninsula Grain Co." lettering is still visible above the add-on lean-to. The three large doors off the south side of the warehouse were used to load out grain sacks onto boxcars prior to their transportation to Port Townsend; however, the railroad spur appears to have already been removed at this point. The south spur that led to what is now the Serenity House building can still be seen splitting off in the foreground. Thanks again to Joan Ross for sharing these photographic treasures!

Update: Added another photo of the vehicle in question. A few got it right!

Rewind the clock 46 years to 1979 and you will see a Sequim that has new few remaining attributes to the one we see today. This is the final year of the Dungeness Agriculture Supply before the Granary's sale and transformation into the Landmark Mall. Next time you are in Thomas Building Center, ask them what the "Olympic Eager Beaver Sale" was all about! And who remembers having a Grizzly Burger? Bonus points to whoever can identify the year, make and model of the white car parked in front of the Granary. Many thanks to Joan Ross for sharing some photographs from her archives!

We are sorry to say we had another uninvited guest last week. Big thank you to the Sequim PD for their quick response and their assistance working to identify our Granary Grinch! Merry Christmas Sequim!
