Sequim Good Governance League

Sequim Good Governance League SGGL was formed to promote good governance in the City of Sequim. A democratic-republic requires good governance to navigate such complexity.

We support transparency, reasoned dialogue, and respect for individuals within the City administration, the City Council, and among residents of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. The Sequim Good Governance League Story

The confluence of events that took over 2020—the pandemic, an epidemic, rising awareness of systemic racism, a tumultuous federal election—revealed that national and global forces can i

ntrude on Sequim’s civic concerns. The Sequim Good Governance League was formed to support and promote good governance in Sequim and the surrounding Sequim-Dungeness Valley area. Good governance thrives on honesty, integrity, openness, inclusiveness, and accountability, using facts, reason, and ethical behaviors to develop non-partisan solutions that serve and protect the residents of Sequim. Purpose: The Sequim Good Governance League (SGGL) is hereby created as a nonpartisan civic organization to promote, encourage, and advocate for good governance, and to educate the citizenry and those who seek and hold public office in the principles and practices of good governance. Vision: That local governmental institutions in the greater Sequim area (the Sequim-Dungeness Valley) serve the needs and interests of the entire community through established best practices of good governance. Good governance is based on, among other things: honesty, integrity, accessibility, inclusiveness, transparency, equity, diversity, competence, accountability, using facts and reason, exhibiting ethical behaviors, and respecting the rule of law. Mission: SGGL seeks to pursue its mission through the development and implementation of a broad, long-term approach, engaging citizens and our elected and appointed government officials in an ongoing dialogue about, and commitment to, good governance.

The Sequim City Council voted to appoint Kelly Burger to fill the open position on the Council at their February 10 meeting. Burger fills position number 1, the seat vacated by Kathy Downer who resigned in January for personal reasons. Burger will serve until the results of the November 2025 election are certified and voters will decide who will complete the term ending December 31, 2027. The City Council decided after interviewing eight candidates: Kelly Burger; Patrick Day, Tom Ferrell, Denny Luce, Gregory McCarry, William Stone; Pete Tjemsland; and RC Weber. Burger was sworn into office by City Clerk Heather Robley at the meeting.

Burger has lived in the City of Sequim for over six years.

“I am excited about this opportunity to contribute to local governance and to meaningfully give back to the community proudly I call home,” Burger said in his cover letter. “As a city councilor, I would take this responsibility seriously. I am excited about the prospect of giving back to the City of Sequim.”

Tomorrow (January 8, 2024) is a BIG DAY (even if you are not a college football fan).

Tomorrow at the 6pm Sequim City Council Meeting at city hall, the new city council members will be sworn in. This includes the SGGL endorsed Dan Butler, Harmony Rutter, and Kathy Downer. (Question: Is this the first time the majority of Sequim City Councilors have been women?)

This will be followed by the election of a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor, both of whom will serve for the next two years.

These are significant good governance events for our community and you can join in person: Council Chambers, Civic Center 152 W. Cedar Street; or by zoom: https://sequimwa-gov.zoom.us/j/86842041779

Congratulations to all for your hard work to make this happen.

What a great year it has been for good governance!
And to close the year, SGGL is decommissioning our nonprofit arm so we can put all of our energy going forward into our political action committee, the SGGL PAC. As part of this process, we are donating 100% of the funds remaining in the nonprofit bank account to Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County. Please see the attached letter.
We look forward to what comes next.
Happy new year everyone.

WE ARE SO PROUD!
During this election, 110 community members pitched in for Good Governance, running as candidates, going door to door to meet neighbors, pitching in small donations, waving signs, and more.

Not only did this result in 2 to 1 winning margins for SGGL's endorsed candidates, but it resulted in "through the roof" (relatively speaking) voter turnout in Sequim.

What?
Check this out:
Sequim voter turnout: 57%
Clallam County (overall) turnout: 43%
Jefferson County turnout: 43%
King County turnout: 37%
Kitsap County turnout: 34%

Anyone else see a connection between the Sequim turnout and our candidates' winning margins?

The SGGL Numbers Are In for 2023
We have concluded our fundraising campaign for the 2023 election and have updated our financial records. This includes all donations received and expenses paid out. We received over $3,500 in donations from 53 donors and paid out just under $3,100 to support our efforts. 35 donations were under $100; 14 - $100 donations were made; and 4 donations were between $101 and $250. There were no donations over $250 and all donations were from Clallam County residents. The detailed financial report can be found by going to the SGGL website. A big thanks to all of our financial supporters and feet on the ground volunteers!

Question of the Day: Do you know who Jim Black is (the fellow running against the Dan Butler, SGGL-endorsed candidate for city council)? Do you agree with his opinions? Do you want him on city council?

Answer: Everyone has a right to their opinion. But SGGL is MORTIFIED with the prospect of Mr. Black being elected to the Sequim City Council, taking us back to 2020 and 2021. Here are two sets of transcripts from city council public testimony in January 2023. Anyone can do the research to discover the misinformation and disinformation in his comments.

Jim Black, January 9, 2023
“The efforts to bring low-income housing to the community is really being pushed by the council.” “You talk about an organization, an NGO, helping elderly people put possibly drug addicted homeless people into their homes. And how are we going to do that? Citizens here don’t want that and that’s not going to happen. You guys have been talking about scooters; bringing scooters to the city. I lived and worked in Seattle for 20 years and that’s just a nightmare. It’s for the homeless and that’s what it’s for.” “What I do believe and what I’m hearing from people being who are being shipped in from Seattle, and it’s a regional MAT clinic, that it’s going to come from Seattle, that is not good for Sequim.”

Jim Black, January 23, 2023
“We’ve seen now and we know of posters posted in Seattle at the Union Gospel Mission that are inviting people to come to the Olympic Peninsula. The poster says, bring your medical kit, your sleeping bag, and a bus ticket and come to the Olympic Peninsula. I wonder who paid for and distributed this? Was it the Sequim City Council? I doubt it. Cuz you guys would never do that. Could it be SGGL? I don’t know, I don’t know. But it surely being pushed here by people that are a part of that. Is it the MAT Clinic? I don’t know, but they said they could make a lot of money if they could get 300 people using their services.”

Question of the Day: What is a Rack Card and why did SGGL buy 5,000?

Answer: A Rack Card is a 2-sided 4" x 8.5" piece of campaign literature that makes a clear and concise pitch for one or more candidates. SGGL will hand out these cards when canvassing, at events, and anytime supporters run across someone in public who might be interested.
