Effective Saturday, March 28 at 8 a.m., the National Weather Service has issued a ** 🚩🚩RED FLAG WARNING🚩🚩** for some North Carolina counties. For counties that aren’t under a red flag, fire danger is still critical. Review weather alerts for North Carolina at weather.gov.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create dangerous fire behavior.

While open burning is permitted during a red flag, it is NOT advised. Please postpone ALL outdoor burning. If there was ever a time to show you can follow instructions the first time they are given, it’s now.

Careless debris burning is the leading cause of wildfires in North Carolina, and you are our best defense against wildfire. For wildfire readiness and prevention tips: preventwildfirenc.org

Nearly half of all wildfires in North Carolina are the result of careless debris burning. Burning leaves, sticks, limbs and brush in the wrong weather conditions, not having the appropriate fire control tools while burning and turning your back on a fire can turn any yard cleanup project into a neighborhood’s worst nightmare. Don’t be that neighbor.

👉Check and monitor the weather. If the forecast indicates dry or windy conditions and elevated fire danger, let burning wait.
👉If you do burn, take the appropriate precautions. Get a valid burn permit. Have the right tools. Stay with and attentive to your fire until it is out cold.

🔥 It’s fireplace season! 🔥
Before you light that first cozy fire, make sure your chimney is clean and ready. With this current cold snap, it’s a reminder that winter will be setting in before we know it.

Each year, fire departments respond to chimney fires caused by creosote buildup, bird nests, or debris. A quick inspection and cleaning can prevent disaster and keep your home and family safe.

✅ Make sure your fireplace/woodstove & chimney are clean and ready for fires.
✅ Burn only dry, seasoned wood - no trash/cardboard/treated lumber
✅ Use a screen or glass door to keep embers in
✅ Check your smoke & CO detectors to make sure they all work

A clean chimney doesn’t just improve your fireplace’s efficiency — it can save your home and your family’s lives. Stay safe and warm this season!
