Day 7 of Week of Remembrance 2026 discusses how the lessons of past incidents can strengthen our commitment to a “culture” that puts firefighter safety over anything. We close this year’s reflection on the serious incidents of 2016 by honoring those lost through a commitment to developing a safety culture that is adapting to the complexities of the modern fire environment. Take an honest inventory with your crew: What are the structures, systems and behaviors that you do consistently to mitigate common hazards and bring everyone home safely?

The National Preparedness Level increased to 3 (PL3) today, June 18, 2026, as significant wildland fire activity continues across multiple geographic areas and the potential for additional large fires remains elevated in the days ahead.

While current resource capability remains sufficient to sustain incident operations, geographic areas are increasingly utilizing national support to accomplish incident management objectives. The increase reflects growing demand for firefighting resources and heightened fire potential across several regions of the country.
