MOMENTS THAT MATTER

Officer Hill received an award back in 2012 for a night that he will never forget. Back in 2012, Officer Hill was on patrol duty when he witnessed something suspicious. He noticed someone hitchhiking and trying to get into a strangers car. Officer Hill took her somewhere safe where she could sleep, eat, and be safe until her family could come pick her up. This person had "significant mental health issues" as described by their family and they also said, "Officer Hill may very well have saved her life that night."

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end, please know that the officers here in Severance are here for you!

MOMENTS THAT MATTER

Officer Martinez shared a story with us about the moment he knew he was supposed to be a police officer, "One winter night around Christmas I was driving and saw someone parked in their car by a park. I went to go check on this person and while talking to him I kept hearing what I thought at the time, was ghost voices saying "mister help us" but I continued looking around and couldn't see anyone. I took one last look by the park and saw two toddlers, not dressed for the wintery night, and they look like they had been outside for a long time. I was able to return them to their grandparents home, which they escaped in the middle of the night by standing on a chair and unlocking the door.

This night made me believe that everything happens for a reason, and if I wasn't a police officer and if I didn’t see that vehicle parked at the park, I wouldn't have been able to help these children find their way back home."

Moments That Matter
The Severance Police Department is made up of officers from many different backgrounds, each with their own story. In our new segment, Moments That Matter, officers will share memorable moments on the job that reminded them why they love serving the community.

Sgt. Arvisais: "Back in 2018 I responded to a house because a woman was scared of her significant other. When I showed up to meet with her, she looked like she had been very abused. I spent hours with the woman, listening to her stories, making her feel heard, and trying to make her feel safe. To spare you the details, the boyfriend was sentenced to 20 years. The woman moved back to her hometown and took her life back. I think about this often and how my work as law enforcement helped this woman live out a better life."
